The Hanover Insurance Group is looking for a President, Specialty Property & Casualty, to lead a dynamic team of top performing leaders. The ideal leader is a dynamic, innovative, strategic, and collaborative leader with a depth of experience across P&C Programs, Specialty Industrial Property, Excess & Surplus lines, and Specialty General Liability. This role requires a strong collaborative leader and who is a strategic thinker with a broad understanding of Specialty Property & Casualty areas to provide strategic direction and executive leadership.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the EVP of Specialty, this leader will own overall responsibility for our P&C Programs unit, Hanover Specialty Industrial Property, Excess & Surplus lines, and Specialty General Liability units. The presidents of each of the business units will report into this role.
This is a full-time/exempt role.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
This executive leader will partner with the EVP Specialty and work with the unit presidents to drive the overall long-term strategy, profitability, and business development, along with talent and expense management to both evolve and grow the businesses. This role requires a strong collaborative leader, a strategic thinker with a broad understanding of Specialty Property & Casualty areas. The leader will have a proven track record of driving change to evolve businesses, developing senior leadership talent, along with expense, staff, and project management. The leader will collaborate with Specialty’s senior leadership team, the Hanover Executive Leadership Team, Hanover’s Field Leadership team and support areas to develop and implement plans to drive our underwriting, distribution, and operational objectives. This will also include partnering with Hanover Agency Markets leadership to identify synergies and growth opportunities. A brief overview of the units:
Programs: Focuses on targeting controlled, homogeneous programs that generate more than $5 million annual premium and $325 million of DWP. Programs offers an innovative product platform with the capability to write on admitted and non-admitted basis providing specialist customized programs based on underwriting performance, including captives, commission slides, deductibles, and SIRS. The team consists of approximately 30 employees with a large office in Windsor, CT, and staff throughout the country. Programs provides total program solutions with an emphasis on: General Liability, Property & Allied lines, Commercial Auto, Worker’s Compensation, and Umbrella & Excess.
Hanover Specialty Industrial: Specializes in industrial risks targeting high hazard industrial businesses in manufacturing processing, warehousing, and distributing. Mainly based in Columbia, MD, HSI has loss control risk specialists countrywide and support of business development executives across the country. The team consists of approximately 50 employees and DWP of over $150 million.
Specialty E & S: Focuses on Excess and Surplus lines targeting mid-sized and small businesses with unique or challenging risks or ones that do not match the appetites of standard carriers. Specialty E&S offers property and general liability coverage options. The business consists of two teams. One dedicated to the wholesale brokerage market and the other focused on retail agents and brokers. The team of approximately 30 employees is placed in various regions across the country and DWP of $100 million
Specialty General Liability: Focuses on complex general liability for middle market customers in the admitted market with any emphasis on Products Liability on a primary and excess basis. The business was launched in 2021 and works in a highly collaborative way with Hanover’s Middle Markets business and Hanover Field Leadership. This fast-growing business currently consists of 4 employees.
Specialty P&C also includes Hanover Specialty Insurance Brokers – a team that supports surplus lines placements of Hanover agents and provides alternative coverage solutions including environmental exposures.
Within this context, we need a results-oriented, experienced leader with a strong customer focus, and deep experience as an inclusive decision maker to work collaboratively in a matrixed environment to deliver total P&C solutions. We are seeking someone with senior executive presence, strong relationships in the wholesale and retail channels, business savvy, highly tuned business development & operational management skills and experience in evolving Specialty P & C areas. Leveraging strong distribution relationships, the President must be able to convincingly grow the Hanover franchise. Building strong relationships with brokers and agents, regional and corporate managers and staff will be a corner stone to their success. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader in creating strategies, driving execution, setting standards, and defining innovation to give our businesses a true competitive advantage. Talent development is a priority; this leader must be able to attract, retain, develop, and empower others while building capabilities to position Hanover for the future. The President of SP&C must inspire and set a vision that others connect to.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
  • CPCU or CIC designations are valued
  • The ability to work in a fast paced, entrepreneurial, aggressively collaborative corporate culture; must work with a sense of urgency.
  • Undergraduate degree required and MBA degree preferred
  • A minimum of 20 years of increasing responsibility as a senior commercial lines’ leader
  • A broad and deep understanding of property and casualty lines insurance operations, regulatory environment, reinsurance, account management, loss control and industry trends
  • A strategic business “thinker”, well versed in business financial analytics (metric/measures)
  • First-rate leadership skills with the ability to build a loyal organization as well as to recruit, develop, and retain talented professionals; capable of fostering and maintaining quality relationships within a strong team environment.
  • Executive presence: ability to convincingly “present”, achieve credibility and provide guidance at the C suite and Board levels as needed
  • Demonstrated evidence of success in managing operations and staff in underwriting and sales/marketing functions within a competitive environment
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, sales, and interpersonal skills required.
