Department Summary
The Institute of Neuroscience (ION) was founded in 1979. These visionary neuroscientists built a highly collaborative, integrated group where biologists and psychologists work together to dissect the development and function of the nervous system. For example, 100% of tenured ION faculty members have published at least one paper with another UO colleague. Furthermore, many have collaborative grants, including a zebrafish program project grant that funds zebrafish research at the University of Oregon.
Reflecting the collaborative philosophy of ION and the University of Oregon, the vast majority of all life science laboratories (including ION, IMB, IE2) occupy contiguous space in the Lokey Science Complex (8 attached buildings). Under one roof, biochemists, cell biologists, developmental biologists, physicists, organic chemists, and physical chemists use a huge variety of model organisms, techniques, and tools to understand and explain the properties of life.

Position Summary
This position requires a highly-motivated person with excellent organizational, laboratory and communication skills and a history of successful research. The successful candidate will participate in a variety of types of experiments investigating the effects of resident microbes on zebrafish nervous system development, both on their own and in collaboration with other lab members. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Perform zebrafish genetics tasks, including screening and genotyping.
  • Use Illumina sequencing to examine changes in gene expression.
  • Generate germ free zebrafish embryos to investigate the role of microbes on CNS development.
  • Perform a variety of molecular and biochemical techniques including immunoprecipitation, RT-PCR, immunolabeling and in situ hybridization.
Minimum Requirements
  • PhD in Biology or related field.
  • Experience with molecular biology and/or biochemical techniques
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with zebrafish research
  • Experience with microbiology, neurobiology, imaging techniques

All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background inquiry.
