POST Investigator
The Utah Department of Public Safety, Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is looking for an Investigator to investigate officer misconduct cases, conduct applicant backgrounds and teach some basic training courses. This person will play an integral role in POST's mission to strengthen faith and confidence in law enforcement for the citizens of Utah.
Principal Duties
  • Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
  • Provides assistance and/or on-the-job training.
  • Teach basic training courses: report writing, interview and interrogation, etc.
  • Review and process police academy candidates' applications to determine entrance eligibility.
  • Conducts investigations into allegations of a variety of inappropriate activities, rules infractions or illegal actions.
  • Interprets, clarifies, explains and applies agency policy and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws and regulations, etc.
  • Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
  • Gives testimony and /or recommendations in court cases and/or hearings.
  • Identifies problems or potential problem areas and recommends solutions.
  • Acts as an expert witness.
  • Enforces laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Conduct investigations into officer misconduct complaints of inappropriate activities, and/or illegal actions.
Ideal Candidate:
  • Is currently Law Enforcement (LEO) certified
  • Has knowledge on interviewing techniques and processes
  • Has extensive experience with teaching and training presentations
  • Is self motivated
  • Has the ability to read, interpret and apply laws, administrative rules, case law to facts of cases
  • Is meticulous and thorough
  • Has the ability to take a concept and turn it into a finished product
  • Has a minimum seven (7) years law enforcement experience
  • Has a minimum two (2) years investigative experience
Preference may be given to candidates who:
  • Have an Associate's Degree or equivalent in semester hours.
Supplemental Information:
  • A valid driver license is required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3- 202(1)(a).
  • Incumbent shall reside within 50 miles of POST (410 West 9800 South, Sandy, Utah)
  • Applicants are subject to drug screening and extensive background investigation prior to final offer of employment.
  • POST certification; Peace Officer Standards Training in Utah is required
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Our Agency
The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) is comprised of 11 divisions and bureaus that include the Utah Highway Patrol, the Division of Emergency Management, Driver License division, Statewide Information and Analysis Center (SIAC), State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), State Fire Marshal, Highway Safety Office, Communications, State Crime Lab, Bureau of Criminal Identification, and Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). The DPS dive team, aero bureau, CERT team and Public Protection Unit (PPU) also fall under the Department of Public Safety.
