Population Data Manager, Youth Suicide

Program Overview


DOHMH is launching a coordinated suicide prevention effort that aims to reduce suicide deaths and suicide- related behaviors among NYC youth and young adults. This effort will be supported by a dedicated team of staff who will:


  • Increase and diversify suicide prevention services for youth and their families/other support networks
  • Develop DOHMH's capacity to monitor this urgent public health issue
  • Provide strategic direction to existing endeavors and expand efforts to mitigate the socio- environmental risk factors for suicide through public health, urban planning, and urban design strategies


This position is located within the Bureau of Children, Youth, and Families, Division of Mental Hygiene, DOHMH, in Long Island City, Queens.


Position Overview


The Population Data Manager for Youth Suicide will lead the monitoring, analysis and reporting of youth suicide-related data to inform NYC suicide prevention research, policy, programming, and intervention efforts. They will report to the Director of Research and Evaluation and collaborate closely with other members of the Suicide Prevention Unit within the Bureau of Children, Youth, and Families (CYF).


Responsibilities


  • Stay updated on data collection and reporting efforts occurring outside of the NYC DOHMH. Work with the Director of Research and Evaluation to establish relationships with these outside sources
  • Maintain data dictionaries and codebooks for suicide-related data points
  • Develop Epi Data Briefs, Vital Signs, conference abstracts, presentations, posters, and empirical manuscripts to further public health knowledge
  • Provide leadership and direction in the planning, development, and implementation of population health data systems for youth suicide-related data, with an emphasis on syndromic surveillance, vital statistics, and youth mental health surveys, among others
  • Contribute to strategic planning in how to meet CYF’s short and long-term data analysis, research, surveillance, programming, and policy-related goals
  • Ensure updates are shared with the Suicide Prevention Unit on a monthly basis
  • Ensure reports are timely and regular updates are provided to agency leadership
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias.
  • Prepare and update IRB materials as needed
  • Monitor trends over time
  • Respond to fast-paced requests for data analyses as requested
  • Perform neighborhood and/or location-level analyses, such as GIS mapping, when appropriate
  • Develop appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative metrics for capturing and reporting youth suicide related outcomes for a variety of projects
  • Prepare written and oral briefs for technical and non-technical audiences as needed
  • Conduct population-level data analyses to support youth suicide related research, including prevention, planning, and policy development
  • Conduct regular analyses to identify suicide-related clusters and other anomalies
  • Work with the Director of Research and Evaluation and others in the CYF bureau to develop reports addressing suicide-related behaviors and trends among NYC youth
  • Other projects as assigned
  • Strong foundation in the social construction of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, and how that shapes data collection practices.
  • Provide support to CYF Suicide Prevention Unit, such as reviewing survey instruments, consulting on evaluations, and strengthening programmatic data capture and interpretation


Qualifications


  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization.
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full- time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or


Preferred Skills


  • The preferred candidate will also possess a demonstrated track record for completing projects within a designated timeline, strategies for doing so, and ability to remain dynamic in a changing environment.
  • The capacity to lead and advise staff involved in various projects; and
  • Manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Have strong project and people management skills
  • Experience in survey development, design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination.
  • Experience incorporating racial equity and social justice principles in data and evaluation activities;
  • Demonstrated experience with scientific writing, and the ability to effectively present data in verbal, written, and visual formats to diverse stakeholders including service providers, program leadership, and non-technical audiences.
  • Be self-motivated and self-disciplined
  • The preferred candidate will:
  • Experience within the field of child and adolescent mental health, specifically as it relates to crisis trauma, comorbidities, and social determinants of health, is preferred
  • Strong analytic and statistical skills with the ability to guide staff on how to manipulate and analyze data using sophisticated statistical software (e.g., SAS, ArcGIS, SPSS, SQL, STATA, R, Tableau) as well as Microsoft Office (Excel pivot tables).
  • Strong competence in data analysis and application of data to inform, drive and improve research, programming, and policy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of evaluation techniques, such as hypothesis development, applying theoretical frameworks, developing research questions and aims, and study design methodologies.
