About The Organization

Patients For Affordable Drugs is the only national patient advocacy organization exclusively focused on lowering prescription drug prices.

The bipartisan organization, founded by a patient with incurable blood cancer, is independent

and does not accept contributions from any organizations that profit from the development or distribution of prescription drugs.


About The Role

Reporting to and collaborating with the Executive Director, the Political Director leads P4AD’s long term and immediate political strategies and alliances in order to advance national strategic plans by building influence and support for P4AD’s policy positions, activities and accomplishments. It is critical that the person in this position understand and have experience in electoral and/or advocacy campaigns, and in the politics of Congress, understanding the drivers, concerns and motivations of elected officials and the hierarchy, committee system and different political groupings in Congress. In addition, working knowledge of and experience with coalitions, coalition building and political outreach are a plus. Knowledge, experience with and understanding of public opinion research is a key element in the job. This role works across departments in collaboration with other members of the team to help research, assess, and bring political power to bear in support of advocacy and policy initiatives. The first focus of this new role will be planning, strategic, and political engagement around the implementation of drug pricing reforms passed in the Inflation Reduction Act.


The Political Director will sustain, nurture and build relationships and drive coordination with allied groups and professionally and effectively represent P4AD with community members, policymakers, and allied organizations. They must also be able to understand the politics of our opponents and how the various industry trade associations, interest groups and companies do their work.


Political Strategy

  • Conceptualize and coordinate public opinion research when needed; facilitate the use of publicly available public opinion research.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with strategic partners and other stakeholders in order to advance P4AD's overall policy objectives.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Legislative Director to ensure maximum effectiveness, correct tone, and appropriate priorities for political action in support of legislative work.
  • Handle immediate political and rapid response matters that arise with skill and judgment.
  • Coordinate engagement and strategic involvement with working groups and coalitions.
  • Direct and manage any electoral activity through P4AD Action if/when needed.
  • Coordinate political strategy as it relates to P4AD's long term collaboration with elected officials and policy makers.


Administration

  • Coordinate with administration and agency officials as needed including to prepare patient testimonials, political events, speeches, roundtables, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Community Organizing and Legislative Director where appropriate in order to facilitate meetings between patients in our community and elected or administrative officials, including assisting with fly-ins, lobby days, etc.


Management/Supervision

  • Work with the Executive Director and President in ad hoc related projects as requested
  • Manage relationships with political strategists, consultants and/or other as needed.
  • Provide direction and guidance, setting priorities, delegating appropriately, communicating effectively, facilitating knowledge sharing, setting goals and objectives, and coaching/mentoring where appropriate.
  • Collaborate across departments with directors as needed including for rapid response.
  • Manage an additional team member depending on the needs and resources of the organization.


Position Qualifications

  • Desire to work for a mission-driven organization and uphold P4AD values and contribute to building a positive team spirit.
  • Experience with healthcare and drug pricing policy is strongly preferred.
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter, flexible, and able to manage multiple tasks at once.
  • Exhibits sound and accurate political judgement and analysis.
  • Familiarity with ActBlue, Every Action and Google Drive
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Writes clearly, informatively, and persuasively with attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Available for full-time (40 hours/week) employment in-person (currently hybrid set-up)
  • Minimum 5+ years experience with non-profits, Capitol Hill, political advocacy or media campaigns, or similar required.
