Description

Essential Functions:


  • Participates in a battery of exams to determine suitability for the position of Police Officer
  • Participates in the academic and physical recruit training program of the Louisville Metro Police Academy

Examples of Duties

Under close supervision...

  • Participates in practical training of firearm usage, driving, self-defense, arrest procedures, use of police equipment and a variety of other procedures and activities related to police work
  • Works in various operational bureaus to provide additional manpower and gain familiarity with the functions of the Louisville Metro Police Department
  • Attends classes in personnel procedures, police regulations, current laws, the criminal justice system, human behavior and a variety of other topics related to police work
  • Performs related work
  • Takes tests to measure knowledge gained, evaluates performance and determines progress made

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent
Other Requirements:
  • Must work a varied schedule
  • Within the last 2 years must not have conducted the business of a private detective agency or any agency supporting private detectives, private policeman or private guards/advertised or solicited any such business in connection with any labor dispute
  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment
  • Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical agility test
  • Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis. An applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations.
  • Applicants who have used a prescription-controlled substance without a prescription more than once within the last six years of application will be disqualified.
  • Must not have an accumulation of nine or more points for traffic violations
  • Applicants who have bought, sold, or trafficked, as defined in KRS 218A.010 and KRS 218A.1431, controlled substances other than marijuana within six years of application will be disqualified.
  • Must not be a current user of illegal drugs
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them
  • Must take a pre-employment written and oral psychological evaluation
  • Must have received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions if having served in any branch of the armed forces of the United States
  • Must not be prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm
  • Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Must not have had certification as a peace officer permanently revoked in another state
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening
  • Applicants who have bought, sold, possessed, or used marijuana within one year of application will be disqualified.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age, if he or she will be 21 years of age at the time of becoming certified as a Police Officer under KRS 15.380 to 15.404.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Applicants who have used a prescription-controlled substance without a prescription on a single occasion within the last six years of application will be disqualified for one year since the last use without a prescription.
  • Applicants who have used an illegal controlled substance other than marijuana within the last six years of application will be disqualified.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Chases suspects on foot in the course of law enforcement/criminal apprehension activities
  • Physically restrains persons in the course of law enforcement activities
  • Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
  • Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements
  • Operates police vehicles during the day and night; observes criminal actions taking place; observes traffic violations; and reviews and prepares reports and correspondence
  • Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media
  • Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting

Supplemental Information

Minimum Starting Salary During Training: $46,280.00
Minimum Starting Salary After Sworn In: $52,561.60 base pay plus $4300 KLEPF pay annually (Base pay varies depending on previous experience as a full-time sworn officer.)


Hiring Incentive Pay, for those hired by December 31, 2022:
  • $4000 after training completed and sworn in as a Police Officer
  • An additional $4000 one year following training completion date
  • Total of $8000 broken down as follows:
    • $4000 after training completed and sworn in as a Police Officer
    • An additional $4000 one year following training completion date
    • Initial payments after completion of required training must be made before September 30, 2024
  • Initial payments after completion of required training must be made before September 30, 2024
THE NEXT RECRUIT CLASS IS SCHEDULED TO START OCTOBER 23, 2023. Y OU MUST COMPLETE TESTING by JULY 24, 2023 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS CLASS.

Candidates who successfully
complete the Louisville Metro Police Recruit Training are able to receive up to 15 credit hours as Transfer Credit towards completing a Criminal Justice Degree at University of the Cumberlands as of 10/16/2018.
