Job Description
Purpose

Testing is scheduled for June 27, 2023

While in-training status, performs a variety of duties to suppress structural and non-structural fires, responds to emergency medical, hazardous material, and rescue situations throughout the City of Kingsport. May serve on special teams as needed (ie: Haz-Mat and Tactical Response)

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes a variety of fire suppression equipment including pike poles, smoke ejectors, and forcible entry tools;
  • Completes incident documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures and maintains department records of local business renderings to facilitate the efficient response and suppression activities.
  • Presents fire prevention/safety programs to school groups, civic groups/organizations and the general public to discuss techniques, and practices;
  • Provides basic/advanced life support and administers basic/advanced emergency medical care and pre-hospital first aid care to individuals when at an emergency scene;
  • Performs duties of Fire Engineer due to staffing requirements;
  • Performs a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, hazardous material, or other emergency situations as a certified Emergency Medical Technician;
  • Performs testing and maintenance of all city hydrants including flow tests, painting and reporting required repairs;
  • Enters, searches and extricates individuals from burning structures and removes dangerous/damaged structures/furniture and fixtures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in regular training/drills programs and a variety of community service activities;
  • Performs all fire suppression activities to combat, and extinguish fires at a fire scene, including laying and/or connecting hose, directing water, raising and climbing ladders;
  • Performs routine maintenance of Fire Station and assigned vehicles including cleaning/mopping/sweeping floors, checking tools, equipment, supplies and materials of each vehicle including all fire suppression, emergency medical response and Hazmat unit to ensure that vehicles are in proper operating condition.
  • Performs daily check/inspection of personal fire suppression gear, protective clothing and related equipment to ensure proper functioning and cleanliness & tests all hoses;

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use and purpose of a variety of specialized equipment, tools and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical assistance, Haz-Mat and tactical rescue situations.
  • Skill in following oral instructions under stressful situations and the ability to remain calm during emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and methods of fire suppression, hazardous material control/clean-up, confined space/steep terrain rescues and basic emergency medical care techniques/methods;
  • Knowledge of the streets, addresses, and locations throughout the City of Kingsport;
  • Skill in applying basic and/or advanced emergency medical assistance techniques;
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department personnel, city personnel, other fire suppression agency staff, the general public;
  • Skill in presenting complex subjects to a variety of audiences at an appropriate level of understanding geared for the listeners;
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting complex statues, ordinances, regulations and standards;
  • Knowledge of State, Federal and City of Kingsport statutes, codes and ordinances including NFPA, OHSA and EPA laws;

Education and Experience

High school graduate or equivalent and must be able to acquire certification as a Firefighter I by the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting Standards within the second year of employment and Firefighter II within 3 years of employment; certification as TN Emergency Medical Technician Advanced within 1st year of enrollment. Current and valid State of Tennessee or Virginia Driver's License.
