Job Description
Salary: $28.49 - $34.09 Hourly


Distinguishing Features of the Class


Under general supervision, the Police Analyst performs specialized technical assignments in support of the City's law enforcement and public safety activities; utilizes law enforcement databases and software applications to gather, categorize, analyze and disseminate information concerning current and prior criminal activity and presents findings and crime patterns to department staff and the public. Upon request, analyze internal data to measure efficiency, effectiveness and compliance with organizational goals and objectives. The work is performed under the supervision of the Crime Analysis Administrator.


Acceptable Experience And Training


  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • An Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Statistics, Sociology or closely related field; AND
  • At least 3 years of work experience in crime analysis, analytical research, statistical data analysis, victim outreach or related; OR
  • Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Must obtain NCIC certification during first year of employment and maintain throughout employment in this position;


Required Special Qualifications


  • Must pass a post-employment offer physical examination, drug screen, background check and polygraph.


Examples Of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)


  • Extract data and develop a variety of standard and customized reports, charts, graphs, and maps.
  • Testify in court, as required;
  • Design, develop, modify, and maintain customized databases for the tracking of statistical information;
  • Determines linking factors in criminal activity, such as method, crime type, suspect descriptions and weapons used;
  • Review, interpret, categorize, and enter information in databases;
  • Coordinates accreditation tasks to meet deadlines and assists with identifying compliance to accreditation standards.
  • Review reports and records to ensure necessary information is available;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Uses general and specialized computer applications to gather and analyze crime data for crime pattern detection, suspect-crime correlations, target-suspect profiles, and crime forecasting;
  • Enter information into data information systems;
  • Respond to a variety of requests for data; make oral presentations; conduct training for staff related to data maintenance and findings;
  • Assist in maintaining security, integrity and accuracy of police records.
  • Provides analysis of calls for service, crime and traffic trends, investigative performance, response times, call processing times, intelligence, staffing and resource allocation, personnel and department performance, demographic data (as required) and other analytics to command staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts in the course of work;
  • Conducts policy research, analysis, and data collection to identify compliance with industry best practices and recommend necessary program changes.
  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Attends regional meetings of crime analysis professionals to share information on crime patterns, new methodologies, and developing tools;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
