Plant Controller Job Overview: Our client in the Iowa City area, is seeking to add a NEW Plant Controller to their team. Plant Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting department. To be successful in this role, you must have strong leadership skills, the ability to effectively report financials, and experience with cost accounting.
This is a Direct Hire role. What you will be doing as a Plant Controller… Oversee the plant accounting department, delivering guidance and training while ensuring adherence to established accounting policies, procedures, and deadlines. Collaborate closely with the FP&A team and plant operations to formulate the annual budget, offering continuous support and insights throughout the year regarding budget-to-actual expense variances. Work in partnership with the corporate cost accounting team and plant operations to update production performance standards regularly, responding to new products, equipment, or process modifications. Validate internal process controls and review data collection points to guarantee the accuracy of financial and performance reporting related to plant operations. Reconcile daily production performance, including material and direct labor usage, and conduct a weekly accounting close for production variances and ending inventory. Provide analysis and explanations for performance deviations from expectations to aid leadership decision-making. Complete the monthly accounting close for all variances and expenses within the period, offering detailed reports and analysis of overhead expenses. Act as a liaison between corporate/centralized accounting functions and the plant operations, ensuring smooth communication and collaboration. Maintain accurate equipment records, collaborating with the corporate fixed asset team, and evaluate the financial impact of repair and maintenance spend. Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to identify and communicate potential impairments. Participate as a committee member in plant projects and capital expenditure requests, prioritizing plans based on their impact and significance to the business. Engage in management meetings with plant operations and support departments to facilitate clear communication and awareness of ongoing events. Foster collaboration with other plant controllers to exchange insights, provide mutual support, troubleshoot issues, and implement best practices for overall accounting and finance department success. Provide leadership and guidance to the plant accounting team, encouraging professional development and growth within the department and the organization. Offer constructive feedback and document performance achievements and areas for improvement in accordance with the performance management process. Review the outcomes of periodic physical inventory counts, analyze adjustments, and conduct audits throughout the year to propose enhancements to inventory handling, transactions, and cycle count frequency. Ensure compliance with existing company policies, audit controls, and processes, while also proposing updates for continuous improvement. Analyze inventory usage, operational variances, and cycle count results to minimize adjustments and fluctuations in ending inventory and production performance. Explore opportunities to extend support and training to other departments regarding processes and systems utilization. Skills you ideally bring to the table as a Plant Controller… Proficiency in computer skills, particularly in working with ERP systems. Strong ability in manipulating data and conducting analysis using spreadsheets is essential. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are a must, encompassing effective communication through email, chats, phone calls, and in-person interactions.
