Job Announcement

Zoning Permit Section, Zoning Administration Division, Department of Planning & Development. With supervision and subject to timeframes, performs a variety of zoning administration functions to include:

  • Compiling application related information from the PLUS system and other databases in support of budget metrics and related agency workforce planning;
  • Helping maintain Section related documents in the property street files, and assisting in tracking and processing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for zoning permit records and documents, within required deadlines; and
  • Providing in-person and on-line customer support, including answering general zoning and permitting questions in-person, via telephone and/or by e-mail, and/or providing referrals to other staff or other departments/agencies as appropriate;
  • Assisting with the maintenance of computers, printers and copiers, and monitoring office related supplies and placing orders as necessary.
  • Serving as a master user of the PLUS application system by providing technical guidance to applicants and assisting in their successful submission of various application types, and retrieving existing permit related data from specific permit records in order to provide updates to applicants upon request;
Note: The salary for this position will not exceed the midpoint of the advertised salary range ($63,552.11).

In accordance with current Fairfax County telework and personnel policies, this position is eligible for partial telework. Telework enrollment and continuance is subject to supervisor approval and County policy.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus two years of non-professional planning or zoning related work, as defined by the area to which assigned.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Seeking a well-organized individual capable of multi-tasking, with previous experience working in a customer service-related position and/or profession, with specific experience working with the general public in a fast-paced job environment. Must be an excellent communicator, with an ability to clearly communicate technical information orally or in writing to members of the public and other professional staff. Must possess strong interpersonal and public relations skills to work effectively with staff members in a team setting, citizens and other customers. Experience using telephone systems, a personal computer, word processing applications, printing and scanning equipment is preferred. Specific experience working at a public counter is strongly desired, as well as experience working for a government regulatory agency or department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor, incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment, input and retrieve information from the computer. Ability to reach and bend to retrieve files from a 7-foot-high shelf filing system. Ability to communicate clearly with others, in person and on the telephone. Employee may be required to lift up to 15 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
