Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (MD/DO) provides direct supervision for the medical staff including consulting physicians and consultation with Director of Nursing and nursing staff.
  • Maintains cooperation and liaison with referring physicians, physicians in the community, other medical and health care facilities.
  • Provides medical consultation to the Admissions Team, Clinical team, Senior Leadership Team, and Executive Leadership Team and participates in clinical and medical team meetings.
  • Maintains communications and liaison with referring parties and aftercare groups to see that medical care and continuity of treatment is provided for patients while under the care of Caron Medical Department Staff and after discharge.
  • Supervises the training of all medical professionals working in the Medical Department and provides input and assistance in both in-service and outside training for Caron staff.
  • Communicates the Caron philosophy of addiction as a family disease to the community through affiliation with professional groups, medical schools, teaching universities, speaking engagements, etc.
  • The Physician will provide emergency and ongoing medical services to patients and may provide medical services to staff in emergency situations.
  • Performs History and Physical on admitted patients. Determines diagnosis.
  • The MD/DO orders all medications and/or discontinues medications.
  • Assesses all medical and psychological conditions throughout treatment stay.
  • Provides on-going assessments on a daily basis of all detox patients to determine next level of care.
  • Provides discharge meeting with outgoing patients.
  • The Physician provides medical lectures to patients.

  • Must be able to travel as needed, including to engagements on behalf of Caron and for travel between Caron locations.
  • Light lifting.
  • Able to ambulate throughout Caron properties, including ascending and descending stairs.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • The Staff Physician shall be a physician with state licensure and board certified in Addiction Medicine.
  • 3 years’ experience in the treatment of addictive illness required.
  • Active and unrestricted state license required
  • Active and unrestricted DEA required
  • Ability to obtain buprenorphine certification if not already obtained.
  • If in recovery, 2 years of continuous sobriety preferred.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage a detoxification unit and the medical care of the population.
  • Ability to teach patients and staff about medical complications of addictions.
  • Knowledge of the fiscal elements of managing a detoxification unit.

Competencies/Measurements:

  • Assures quality medical care is given by modeling and establishing standards of practice - Direct observation
  • Assures qualified personnel provide a level of medical excellence - Patient satisfaction; Licensing certification guidelines met
  • Works in cooperation with Human Resource and clinical team to provide the latest information regarding care for chemically dependent and co-morbid problems; Training; Grand rounds; Staff meetings; Observation
  • Participates in local and national conferences and organizations as well as publishing articles providing recognition of Caron and Caron’s philosophy – Articles; Conferences attended.
