Job Description

Responsibilities


I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Reference: State of Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 85, Subchapter 6)
  • Depending upon area of assignment, performs a variety of duties and responsibilities as described below.
  • Under the supervision of a Physician, the physician assistant functions as an expert practitioner. They provide health care that includes services to individuals and families, which includes health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic disease. Direct care services may include, but is not limited to , obtaining patient histories, providing a complete or focused physical examination, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests,, various diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures; and, first-assisting in surgical procedures, etc., within scope of practice and licensure. They also provide patient and family education, and provide care for social, economic, and ethical issues within the scope of the health care provider.
  • Develops protocols for care, as appropriate, services as a health care researcher, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient care advocate.
  • "Supervision" means overseeing the activities of, and accepting responsibility for, the medical services rendered by a physician assistant. Supervision shall be continuous but shall not be construed as necessarily requiring the physical presence of the supervising physician at the time and place the services are rendered.
  • “Physician assistant" means an individual who has been certified by the board to practice medicine with physician supervision. A physician assistant may perform those duties and responsibilities delegated by the physician assistant's supervising physician.
  • "Supervising physician" means a physician or group of physicians or an osteopathic physician and surgeon licensed to practice medicine and surgery in this State who accepts the responsibility for the supervision of services rendered by physician assistants. The supervising physician shall direct and exercise supervision at all times.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Operates various office and medical equipment including personal computers.
  • Occasional: kneeling, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground twisting body.
  • Essential: standing, sitting, walking, stooping/bending, squatting, finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting and pushing/pulling usual weight of 20 pounds, reaching above, at and below shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions, frequent gripping of an object.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases and body fluids, sharps and chemicals.
  • May be required to deal with hostile patients and/or families
  • Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
  • Graduate of accredited school for Physician Assistant Program approved and accredited by the American Medical Association’s Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditations.
  • Depending on area of assignment, additional certification(s) may be required (i.e. ACLS, PALS, ATLS, ENLSS).
  • Evidence of current National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistant (NCCPA) certification.
  • Current Hawaii State license as a Physician Assistant in good standing.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Prescriptive authority for non-controlled and controlled substances depending upon area of assignment.

B. EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) year experience as a Physician Assistant in area of expertise preferred.
