Purpose of Position:

Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, performs work of a pharmacy technician, in accordance with Article 137 of the Education Law, specifically Article137-A, which details the tasks permitted for a licensed pharmacy technician and an unlicensed pharmacy technician. Ensures patient safety, optimal utilization of resources, service delivery and compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and all other relevant regulatory policies and standards of care to improve outcomes and patient experience.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

1. Counts dosage units of drugs, and places unit doses in appropriate containers for dispensing.

2. Prepares non-patient specific batches of IV solutions in accordance with established protocols.

3. Receives written prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.

4. Retrieves prescription data from a computer generated file for review by a Pharmacist.

5. Obtains data for determining prescription cost.

6. Prepares manual dispensing records for approval by a Pharmacist.

Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.
