Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, dispenses unit dose, out-patient prescriptions and assists in the preparation of IV additive solutions, in accordance with established procedures as outlined in Part 29.7 of the Pharmacy Handbook; Performs related work.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inpatient
- Fill Department of Health (DOH) prescription paper.
- Performs pharmacy related clerical tasks.
- Receives written and electronic prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers for pharmacist check.
- Deliver medications to nursing units/clinic/ED/OR/etc.
- Prepares manual dispensing records for approval by pharmacist. Maintains & retrieves pharmacy records using automated and/or manual systems.
- Check for expired medications.
- Counts dosage units of drugs and places unit doses in appropriate containers for dispensing
- Obtain drugs from stock and return to stock.
- Fill non-controlled medications in automatic dispensing cabinets (i.e. PYXIS).
- Assist pharmacist in filling medication orders and prepare emergency code trays.
- Perform unit dose medication cart exchanges.
- Prepares non-patient specific batches of IV solutions in accordance with established protocols.
Outpatient
- Verify, updated, or create a patient profile and verify the ordered medication(s) is available
- Direct patients without insurance nor an active Fee-scale to a Financial Counselor for a Fee-Scale Assessment.
- Check patient's profile against new Rx's to determine if refills are due, and if dose has changed.
- Ability to generate patient profile reports upon request by patient or an authorized agent of the patient
- Prepare medications, based on prescription labels, and dispense medications after verified by a pharmacist.
- Determine the patient’s preferred language, use Cyracom of Official Translator Service as needed.
- Retrieves prescription data from a computer-generated file for review by a Pharmacist
- Obtain data for determining prescription cost (insured, uninsured or fee scaled).
- Enter new prescription data into pharmacy software program (i.e. OPUS), for pharmacist verification and review
- Generate patient's ticket number using Q-Matic machine.
- Have required knowledge of Opus-Interactive System.
- Assist Pharmacist in filling Prescriptions
- Patients with commercial insurance, enter insurance information, adjudicate claim, and resolve rejection (if applicable).
Minimum Qualifications
Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.
