Job Overview


Perioperative Advanced Practice Providers (APP) are members of the perioperative health care team working in collaboration with anesthesiology, surgery, nursing, and other health care professionals to provide pre-surgical management. APPs in this clinical role are responsible for completing the History and Physical examination on surgical candidates and coordinating with the Surgical and Anesthesia teams to meet the pre-surgical needs of patients. Responsibilities included in the Perioperative APP role includes: management of chronic/acute illness and disease, leadership in clinical practice, arrangement of clinical consultation, promotion of education, involvement in scholarly work and service activities, fiscal responsibility, and dedication to professional growth and development.

Qualifications

  • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association required. Prescriptive Authority, DEA, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master’s Degree Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Experience: Three years combined experience as RN or PNP
  • Licensure(s): Registered Nurse (RN) License; Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
  • Certification(s): Primary Care, Acute Care, or Dual Acute/Primary Care certification
    • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association required. Prescriptive Authority, DEA, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

  • Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs
  • Infancy - >30 days to 1yr
  • Neonate - <30 days
  • Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs
  • School age - >5yrs to 13yrs
  • Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs
  • Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Provides and coordinates care for patients presenting for surgical procedures, through a collaborative practice with the Anesthesia and Surgical care team
  • Assesses family communication, adaptation, and coping skills to provide the best support for the family, including recognizing when the need for crisis or other interventions may be necessary
  • Maintains a knowledge base by reading professional literature, attending educational programs, and reviewing changes in health legislation and relevant professional research
  • Collects pertinent patient information including clinical history, diagnostic tests, physical examination and behavioral and developmental assessments
  • Works effectively in a multi-disciplinary, academic health care setting
  • Accurately documents relevant data including but not limited to results of diagnostic tests, laboratory results, patients’ condition, response to therapies and follow-up interventions
  • Utilizes appropriate resources and inter-disciplinary team to establish appropriate priorities of care
  • Evaluates patient physiological and behavioral responses to interventions for revision of management plans
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and implementation of evidence-based clinical care to improve outcomes

SCOPE & LEVEL
