Job Description

This part-time, flex position is part of the Performing Arts Center within the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University and is responsible for the seating and the safety of patrons in all performance venues. Front of House staff are expected to offer the highest level of customer service possible to guests, donors, visiting artists, artist management, patrons, and any other member of the public or administration they may encounter. Front of House Staff are also expected to carry out any job function management deems as appropriate and within the scope of caring and maintaining for the theater, customer service, audience experience, pre-show prep, post-show breakdown, and guest and staff safety/emergency response/security. This hourly position will assist the Blair School of Music based on scheduling and program needs.
Situated on Vanderbilt Campus in the heart of Nashville, TN, the Blair School of Music is a vibrant and fast-paced school at Vanderbilt University.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Other duties as directed.
  • Politely direct and escort patrons to their seats.
  • Understand and demonstrate proper procedures for assisting patrons with disabilities.
  • Visually sweep the theaters to check for potential safety issues and lost and found items.
  • Remain at assigned post throughout the event unless taking an assigned break.
  • Assess assigned section for cleanliness.
  • Provide patrons with programs and other relevant materials.
  • Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of all venues and a good understanding of evacuation procedures from all points within each venue.
  • Enforce appropriate house rules, including emergency procedures
  • Attend pre-event Front of House / Usher meetings and other trainings as required by management.
  • Provide general seating directions at the entrance points to each facility including, but not limited to, tearing or scanning tickets, confirmation of proper credentials required for entry to the event and not allowing access to those who did not have the proper credentials or ticket for the event.
  • Assist with the overall cleanliness of the entire facility including, but not limited to, picking up litter, lost and found items, and removing event signage.
Qualifications
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time is necessary .
  • Ability to read small print is necessary .
  • Maintain a professional, neat, and well-groomed appearance, adhering to uniform requirements is necessary .
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties is necessary .
  • High School Diploma is preferred .
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. waist high, and able to assist with set up of furniture for events as directed is necessary .
  • Work in a fast-paced, busy environment with environmental conditions such as noise, heights, dark/dim/absence of lighting is necessary .
  • Ability to descend/ascend ramps and inclines/declines is necessary .
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English is necessary .
  • Ability to climb steps repeatedly is necessary .
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the diverse ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of guests and staff attending or working within the building is necessary .
  • Ability to bend, stretch, reach, and kneel without restriction is necessary .
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise, and firmness is necessary .
