Job Description
This position is REMOTE, but candidate must reside in San Diego or Imperial County.
Company Description: NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit organization that provides free education, support services, and advocacy to improve the quality of everyone affected by mental illness.
Program Information: The Peer Training and Placement Program supports peers and family members that are seeking to become state certified peer support specialists by teaching the Medi-Cal Peer Support Certification (PSSC) Training. The Support Trainer works directly with the Trainer(s) under Program Manager Supervision.
Primary Responsibilities/Function: The Support Trainer works with the Lead Trainer and is responsible for operating online platform technology for classes (Zoom) and co-presenting online learning through co- facilitating 80- hour Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (PSSC) Training.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide biweekly job leads for placement.
  • Provide support to class participants through the computer, FaceTime, telephone, text conversations, or email communication. Document all communication and provide resources as needed.
  • In addition to training, a primary focus is community outreach (virtual and in-person) to connect and recruit both family and peer qualified participants in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
  • Represent the NAMI perspective of mental health and recovery in public, social, and educational settings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain an educated, open, and positive viewpoint towards mental health.
  • Understand and practice the 17-Core Competencies for Peer Workers in Behavioral Health Services.
  • Assist the Education Department to conduct virtual outreach to specific communities.
  • Operate the Zoom platform during the class: open Zoom, monitor chat, record sessions, move people into breakout rooms, launch polls and surveys, and take attendance.
  • Co-present the classes/sessions online (through Zoom) using excellent presentation and communication skills, both non-verbal, verbal and written, practicing and modeling Recovery Language.
  • Document and input program data, as assigned.
Accountability: Reports to the Peer Training and Placement Program Manager and provides support to Trainers.

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Minimum Requirements
  • Experience training or teaching adult learners
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in the use of computer software (Microsoft Office Access. Database, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and online platforms such, Zoom, email, social media, and web navigation.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Certificate of training completion as Peer Support Specialist OR two years' experience clearly demonstrated equivalent work or supervised volunteer experience as a Peer Support Specialist
  • Ability to work virtually as part of a team with diverse populations.
  • Reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in the Core Competencies of Peer Workers.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, non-verbal & written).
  • Grounded in personal recovery.
  • Self-identified as a Peer/Family Member (lived experience with mental health).
  • Demonstrate knowledge in cultural and linguistic competency, co-occurring, and gender responsiveness, and trauma informed care practice.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely, with demonstrated ability to collaborate.
  • Ability to plan, analyze, problem solve, manage time and multi-task while teaching a live class.

  • A strong positive viewpoint towards mental health & recovery language is essential.
  • Have a private space (room) to work remotely. Confidentiality and discretion are a must.
  • Bilingual & bicultural English/Spanish or other threshold language desired.
  • Completion of Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification Training and/or other Support Specialist training, such as Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), and Peer Employment Training (PET), NAMI Family to Family Course desired.
  • Flexibility & availability to work some evenings/weekends.
  • Reliable access to internet
Working Conditions and Job Setting: This is a primarily remote (out-of-office/work-from-home) position, with in-person outreach presentations and community events. Must be able to work with and communicate with diverse populations, teaching and providing training and digital support.
