Summary:

Moms Do Care EMPOWER Peer Mentor Doulas (PMD) will provide physical and emotional support to pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people (PPPP) with substance use disorder (SUD) during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Doulas will promote recovery by encouraging, mentoring, educating, and connecting PPPP with SUD to resources in the community. They will offer full-spectrum doula services in primary care, behavioral health, home, and community settings. They will provide doula care to participants through pregnancy and postpartum and offer support with referrals and treatment plans offering advocacy and assistance in navigating through the complex needs and services of families in recovery.

Job Responsibilities:

1) Will work in collaboration with the MDC EMPOWER team to increase access to services for pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people (PPPP).

2) Must have the ability to support PPPP with evidence-based practices to address barriers to treatment and stigma.

3) Must have comfort with multiple pathways to recovery from SUD, work within a harm reduction framework and embrace a patient-centered approach that recognizes individualized autonomy.

4) Will demonstrate a willingness to work with clients at any stage of substance use or recovery and assist engagement in harm reduction/ treatment options.

5) Must have the ability to provide feedback without judgment or advice.

6) Must have the flexibility to adapt to changing needs of clients and be willing to work in a variety of settings: hospital, community, medical office, home, court, jail, etc.

7) Communicates and collaborates with team members on an ongoing basis to discuss and coordinate client care and treatment.

8) Demonstrates ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, families, and team members.

9) Completes all EMPOWER PLUS Peer Mentor Doula training.

10) Acts as a liaison to EMPOWER PLUS Care Team by attending meetings and collaborating care.

11) Maintains a flexible schedule to work with clients in the community setting.

12) Conducts regular in-person visits during the perinatal period, of increasing flexibility and frequency in the 6 weeks preceding birth and the 8-12 weeks following birth. On-call coverage for labor, birth, and immediate postpartum.

13) Conducts assigned office visits and office hours. Accompanies clients to provider visits and meetings to offer support, advocacy, and improved access to care.

14) Able to assist clients in navigating referrals and community resources

15) Maintains accurate and complete client intakes. Supports clients' completion of and engagement with recovery plans, birth plans, and pregnancy plans.

16) Maintains neat, accurate, and timely records of client visits and data collection as required by the program.

17) Participates in supervision regularly with Doula Program Manager

18) Notifies the Doula Coordinator and Project Manager of emergent issues, participant crises, and any issues regarding the safety and welfare of program participants.

19) If assigned to transport clients, must comply with the following requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must complete the annual driver training program.
  • Must provide proof of valid license and insurance to employer annually.
  • Maintain a car in good working order with a valid Massachusetts Inspection sticker.
  • Must report any accident involving a patient to Doula Program Manager

20) Must maintain at least statutory minimum auto insurance: bodily injury to others $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident; Personal Injury Protection (PIP) $8,000 per person per accident; Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto $20,000 per person/ $40,000 per accident and Damage to Someone Else's Property $5,000 per accident.

Required Experience

1) The strongest candidates will have lived experience related to recovery, addiction, family separation, and/or mental health challenges in the perinatal period.

Preferred Experience

1) Previous experience as a birth or postpartum doula

2) Geographic knowledge of Franklin County
