TITLE: Patient Care Assistant/Health Care Assistant

JOB OVERVIEW: A Patient Care Assistant/Health Care Assistant performs routine nursing services under the supervision of a professional nurse.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Any patient care area

HOURS OF WORK: Variable

RESPONSIBLE TO: Charge Nurse; Shift/Unit Manager

PREREQUISITES:

  • Current licensure to practice in the State of Washington as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform patient care activities as evidenced by passing score of pre-employment assessment of 75%.
  • One (1) year patient care experience within the last three (3) years (or 144 hours of clinical training in the acute care setting).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA Phlebotomy certification requirements completed within 90 days of hire
  • Capable of comprehending, executing, and acting within scope of practice.
  • Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English Language.
  • Neat and well-groomed appearance.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in a diverse population.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional developments of all age groups.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

B. Essential Responsibilities and Competencies

Demonstrates applied knowledge in:

  • Generic and department-specific structure/process standards.

Reports significant signs and symptoms as indicated below.

  • BP: Systolic above 150 or below 100 Diastolic above 90.
  • Temperature above 99 degrees or below 97.
  • Pulse above 100 or below 60.
  • Respirations above 24 or below 16.
  • Postural blood pressure change of more than 10 or rise in pulse rate of 20.
  • Any nausea or emesis.
  • Any change in level of consciousness or mobility.
  • Any rash, reddened skin, abrasion, skin tear, bruising, swelling in extremities or IV site, or abdominal distention.
  • Any IV or tube feeding pump alarm.
  • Any low IV or tube feeding bag (less than 50 cc).
  • Any problem with chewing, swallowing, or poor dietary intake.
  • Any change in skin color, moistness, pallor, cyanosis, diaphoresis.
  • Any change in breathing pattern, shortness of breath, amount and type of sputum.
  • Any complaint of discomfort or pain.
  • Any wound drainage.
  • Any change in urination: frequency, pain, cloudy, foul-smelling, brownish or red color, amount less than 250cc in a shift.
  • Any change in stool: diarrhea, constipation, tarry or bloody, results of guaiac testing.
  • Any significant change in patient or family behavior or emotional status.
  • Rings or other jewelry that is fitting too tightly.
  • Jagged toenails - do not attempt to trim.
  • Any nosebleed.
  • Any report of dizziness or witnessed patient unsteadiness.
  • Any problem with patient compliance to care.
  • Recognizes and responses appropriately to:
  • Cardiac/pulmonary arrest
  • Neonate
  • Demonstrates understanding of the developmental/behavioral characteristics of ages served.
  • Psychiatric emergencies

    • Demonstrates safe use of patient care equipment.

1. Performs phlebotomy as requested according to correct procedure.

ADDENDUM - Patient Care Assistant / Health Care Assistant

Unit Specific Requirements

  • Remote Monitor Technician
  • Close visual monitoring and communication for safe patient observation through video/active microphone technology.
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency in EPIC Monitor software, camera monitoring equipment, and additional communication platforms.
  • Remote monitoring command center will be centrally located in the Staffing Office.
