JOB SUMMARY:


Under limited supervision, provides leadership and direction for patient safety and safety improvement strategies. This role is responsible for the coordination of patient safety activities as outlined in the Patient Safety Program. The position encompasses various roles (e.g., coordinator, educator) and requires effective interpersonal and management skills to motivate team members to embrace the Culture of Patient Safety. In addition, the individual will assist with the management of the Event Reporting System and will provide support to select committees under either the UM UCH Patient Safety Program.


Qualifications


MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Education & Training: Bachelor’s degree in related health science field is required; Master’s degree preferred. CPPS or CPHQ certification preferred. Training and/or experience preferred in principles of LEAN management, root cause analysis, FMEA, risk assessments, and human factors engineering integration for patient safety.


Work Orientation & Experience: Current licensure in related field is required (i.e. Nursing, Physical Therapy, Environmental Health and Safety, etc.). A minimum of two (2) years of experience in Patient Safety is required; five (5) years preferred. Experience in a hospital setting is required.


Skills & Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills and a highly collaborative style, inclusive of all stakeholders. Ability to build consensus, provide strong leadership in a team environment. Knowledge of federal, state and local requirements of regulatory and accreditation agencies. Highly effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to work with team members at all levels of the organization, as well as with regulatory agencies. Knowledge of safety data measurement, analysis and improvement strategies. Proficiency and demonstrated effectiveness in problem-solving, analytical skills and implementation of new safety programs. Ability to work with limited supervision in the management of safety projects and programs. Ability to develop collaborative programs and projects with other disciplines. Ability to contribute to team effectiveness, build relationships and facilitate improvements. General knowledge of safety database management and the ability to work with statistical concepts and analysis. Strong change management skills. Flexible and able to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
