We hire exceptionally qualified individuals who are committed to the mission, vision, and values of our organization. Our recruitment process strives to be interactive, accessible, and responsive. Once employed, the Folger provides a generous compensation, leave, and benefits package, as well as many opportunities for personal and professional growth.
:
The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking a Part-Time Editorial Assistant, Shakespeare Quarterly, to join the Folger Institute. This individual, under the supervision of the Managing Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, will perform duties related to fact-checking and copyediting, including primary fact-checking; monitoring submission process; and general administrative support.
Successful candidates for this position will have demonstrated high attention to detail and the ability to manage their time independently and within small teams.
This is a part-time role with a work week of 14-20 hours that can be scheduled Monday-Friday, 8:45am-4:45pm. This position is hybrid; a remote and on-site work schedule will be discussed with hiring manager. Some days will require on-site work to access collections for fact-checking. Candidates must live local to the DMV area.
Health & safety: The health and well-being of all staff, contractors, and visitors is our top priority. While the Folger no longer requires masks or vaccinations (except for AEA spaces), we support and encourage individuals to take the safety precautions they are most comfortable with, and we ask that individual choices are respected. As we wrap up construction and move to work more consistently on-site this summer, the Folger will continue to review and update polices, in conversation with our staff.

Compensation:
  • This is a weekly-paid hourly position, with a pay of $25/hour for a 14-20-hour work week.
  • Part time staff are eligible to participate in pre-tax transit deductions, contribute to the 403b plan (no employer contributions), and utilize the Employee Assistance Program.
Duties:
  • Monitors the submission processes of both articles and book reviews for Shakespeare Quarterly. This includes tracking submissions in the Editorial Manager web-based manuscript database and guiding the manuscript flow through recording receipt of incoming manuscripts, sending manuscripts to readers, updating the manuscript status, and processing correspondence with authors and readers. Maintains records of books and articles received for review and flow of assigned reviews.
  • Serves as a secondary point of contact for the SQ publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP). Forwards subscription and advertising requests as appropriate. Provides OUP with gratis list as needed; with Managing Editor, may assist with selection and curation of online journal content.
  • Provides primary fact-checking for articles and book reviews to be published by the journal. Retrieves print and online references, verifies accuracy of references, quotations, and other cited matter. Uses collections, online materials, and specialized databases as needed.
  • May assist with securing from accepted authors permissions and supporting documentation necessary for publication, and necessary permissions and digital files required for the reproduction of images in the pages of the journal.
  • Provides administrative support to Shakespeare Quarterly, including answering routine inquiries and forwarding messages as appropriate.
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) required. M.A. preferred.
  • Experience with academic journals strongly desired.
  • Experience fact-checking for articles and book reviews required.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team and with frequent interruptions.
