- Prepare and file complaints, motions, briefs, and arbitration statements; prepare special packages, discovery demands, and answers to interrogatories. Review the discovery provided and summarize deposition testimony.
- Compose e-mails and correspondence.
- Interview and screen prospective clients.
- Communicating with clients, law offices, insurance adjusters, medical offices, and experts.
- Assist in preparing for depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
- Prepare disbursement of settlement funds and request checks from the accounting department
- Assist with personal injury claims, including discovery and settlements.
- Preparing witnesses and clients for depositions.
- Understand medical terminology, common injuries, and basic human anatomy.
- Monitor deadlines and be proficient in maintaining the law office calendar.
- Make travel arrangements for attorneys.
- Transcribing legal documents, if applicable.
- Answering inquiries from potential new clients
- Trial preparation.
- Scheduling court hearings, depositions, and other proceedings.
- Great communication is key, especially when it comes to confusing and complex legal documents.
- Investigative skills are valued, as you may need to take photos of a scene, interview witnesses, and obtain more information on your own.
- Trial preparation and expertise is important if a settlement can’t be reached.
- Teamwork and collaborative skills are paramount in working with lawyers, clients, and employees at the firm.
- Privacy and professionalism go hand in hand. You’ll need to respect HIPAA laws and the privacy of your clients.
- General knowledge of the medical field and insurance policies is needed in everyday tasks as a personal injury paralegal.
- Familiarity with New Jersey e-courts, NJ Courts rules and legal procedures.
- Knowledge of day-to-day operations and law operations.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish – fluency in writing and oral.
- Must possess a minimum High School or GED equivalent with a Paralegal Certificate or and associate degree, Bachelors degree.
- Able to multitask and handle an average of 150 cases in support of the PI team.
- Computer Literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites, Smart Advocate or Cases Management systems and Scanning.
- Possess advanced secretarial and administrative skills.
- At least 5 years of working experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary in the Personal Injury and or Workers Compensation on the Plaintiff side.
