Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Studio: Paint Studio

Reporting to the Director of the Painting Studio, the Mentor is responsible for the implementation of AFH’s program mission within the context of the Painting Studio. In particular, this position focuses on the training, orientation, and ongoing mentorship of teen artists, and participation in and assistance with AFH functions and events. In collaboration with the Painting Studio team, the Mentor works on external client projects, as well as AFH internal projects, taking a holistic approach to creating and producing tangible and marketable products that generate revenue for the Painting Studio and AFH at large.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (Level of effort: 18 hrs / wk)

• Create an environment that maximizes teen members’ success within Mentor’s Painting Studio group by creating and communicating clear expectations for their participation while strengthening their understanding of the artistic process and recognizing STEAM moments; building their interpersonal communication skills (among teen team members and as part of the client management and relationship building process); and ensuring their professional development.

• Enthusiastically build a relationship with each mentee in the Painting Studio group through active conversation and provide one-on-one instruction to young people participants.

• Be available to counsel and provide important information to young people within the Painting Studio group regarding AFH activities and programs. In particular, enthusiastically promote AFH academic support and educational opportunities (for example, tutoring, portfolio development and college readiness) as an important benefit to AFH employment. Be part of the solution!

• Provide direction and mentoring to teen members involved in client-driven projects, ensure that prospective/current clients’ visions and aesthetics inform the artistic process, and implement quality control during the production process and prior to product delivery to clients, in collaboration with the Painting Studio Director, project lead, in collaboration with the sales team.

• Educate and inform mentees on art history and current art trends.

JOB DESCRIPTION 2023

• Track teen member attendance/lateness, approve hours worked, evaluate mentee participation and create/maintain a contact list of all teen participants in your group.

• Enthusiastically support the Administration and Education Departments in compiling information on teen artists and ensure their participation in completing annual evaluations and surveys. Actively participate in the formulation of recommendation letters for relevant teens as part of the college application process.

• Provide mentorship in the use, cleaning and maintenance/repair of studio tools and equipment.

PROJECTS AND STUDIO SUPPORT (Level of effort: 12 hrs /wk)

• Provide leadership and design inputs for select projects, for both external clients and, as needed, AFH internal projects.

• React to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently, as well as troubleshoot any problems that arise during production.

• Communicate and make accessible all project goals and schedules related to projects in which you lead within the Painting Studio. Contribute to, and involve teen members in, the implementation of project debriefs, notes to file, documentation (including photography of finished products), development of tear-sheets and archiving during the closing phase of the project cycle.

• Review participant monthly reports with the Painting Studio Director.

• Assist the Paint Studio Director to compile and produce a Painting Studio Summer Report at the end of every summer session that reflects summer educational and entrepreneurial activities.

• Participate in Summer Mentor Training Workshop facilitated by the Painting Studio Director.

• Review and update Painting Studio Summer Manual as needed, in collaboration with the Painting Studio Director.

• Collaborate with Studio Director to develop trainings, workshops, and documented processes to share studio ethos and practices, lessons learned, and how to troubleshoot problems as part of mentors’ orientation and ongoing development.

• Managing and updating participant’s status in the timesheet according to your studio rosters.

• Support and help plan weekly strategies with paint studio mentors (curriculum, education goals and tasks, artwork adjustments, etc.)

• Track and approve participant hours on ADP app.

• Organize studio and maintenance of studio layout and supplies for programming.

• Advise on identifying young people for special projects and events.

• Support oversight and coordination in recruitment efforts and tours with the Recruitment Coordinator.
