General Description of the Role


Responsible for managing the day to day packaging facility maintenance and production requirements including the safety, quality and performance results across multiple packaging lines, processing and material handling. Responsible for the direct supervision and development of Packaging Technicians (electrical, mechanical or combined) in the maintenance and troubleshooting of all packaging equipment and machinery.


Mission/Objectives

The Packaging Maintenance Supervisor will manage the Packaging Maintenance activities and staff to ensure all aspects of the Maintenance operations are completed to produce a quality product accurately while driving continuous improvement in the operation.


Key Responsibilities and Activities


  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the packaging maintenance department including the training and development of the packaging employees.
  • Ensure all employees are following prescribed PPE safety requirements for their assigned work area.
  • Consistently promote a safe working environment. This includes keeping all materials, supplies, tools and any other production related items in their place. Implement and sustain 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain).
  • Immediately report and properly document any safety items related to you or any departmental employees. Safety items to be reported include but are not limited to bodily injury, near misses, potential dangers, spills and/or any other accidents.
  • Ensure all records and maintenance related documentation are accurately completed and stored per retention policy.
  • Provide coaching, feedback and training as appropriate to develop team capabilities, improve performance and/or onboard new employees.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a Preventative Maintenance program to keep machinery and equipment operating at capacity and to prevent unscheduled down time. This includes maintaining all line drawings and other line documentation related to the packaging department.
  • Provide information for budget preparation and adhere to annual departmental operating budget.
  • This position shall work with the Packaging Director and team to resolve any critical quality issues as defined by the North American Quality Director, Plant Director or Packaging Director.
  • Establish maintenance quality and consistency checks and measures. Frequent audits of machinery and equipment to be conducted to ensure proper procedures are being followed and a quality product is being processed.
  • Shall implement continuous improvement actions to close gaps of KPI’s or increase productivity as needed. Lead and/or participate in Root Cause Problem Solving (RCPS) to solve problems by attempting to identify and correct the root causes of events, as opposed to simply addressing their symptoms.
  • Communicate and address any deficiencies that affect Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to Packaging employees, as appropriate.
  • Ensure all machinery and equipment is managed in compliance with all SOP’s to target quality outcomes. Maintain compliance with all GMP, ISO and food safety standards related to the packaging department.
  • Supervise a team of packaging maintenance technicians (Electrical, Mechanical or Combined) in a way that complies with Union contract ways of working while engaging the team in packaging accountabilities and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Maintain parts and storeroom within budgeted guidelines.
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with other packaging department employees to ensure daily production demands are met, achieve KPI’s and correct issues as they arise.
  • In coordination with the site EH&S Manager, ensure all operations comply with GMP practices and site safety rules.
  • Work with appropriate internal stakeholders to drive continuous improvement and/or to resolve packaging risks when identified.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and all other regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with TTB and other regulatory requirements. Must be able to accurately read and record packaging data by means of work schedules or computer equipment.
  • Maintain equipment histories, repair records and resource library.
  • Drive the development of an empowered and self-directed maintenance department.

    • A minimum of 5 to 7 years’ experience in progressive maintenance/engineering positions, with packaging experience in the consumer packaged goods industry
    • Experience in beverage or beverage alcohol experience is a plus
    • Experience managing complex projects and budget adherence
    • Previous experience supervising within a union environment
  • Vendors/Contractors/Government officials QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft office and other production maintenance monitoring and control systems & technology
  • Experience managing complex projects and budget adherence
  • BA/BS degree in Engineering, Science, or related discipline preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years’ experience in progressive maintenance/engineering positions, with packaging experience in the consumer packaged goods industry
  • Previous experience supervising within a union environment
