Job Summary
Climate services is a sub-field within climate and atmospheric sciences that focuses on translating observational and modeled atmospheric data into information that climate-impacted decision-makers depend on to improve safety, profitability, and well-being. The Midwestern Regional Climate Center (MRCC) and Indiana State Climate Office (IN-SCO) are key organizations at Purdue University that emphasize and promote climate services through data monitoring, tools, resources, outreach, and stakeholder engagement.
The Operations Climatologist provides climate services and program support to the MRCC and INSCO through activities such as customer support, data request fulfillment, data monitoring and fieldwork, office administration, communications support, and outreach and engagement.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Assist in developing and deploying content on social media and websites
- Assist with deployment and maintenance of weather instrumentation, data collection, metadata analysis, and database entry
- Perform data analysis and content development for weekly, monthly, and quarterly climate summaries and reports
- Collect and deliver climate data and information based on user specifications and needs
- Systematically track outreach events, media mentions, and stakeholder engagements for internal and external reporting
- Develop climate-related educational materials and content for various audiences and various dissemination platforms
- Coordinate communications for mesonet host sites
- Support day to day research related activities for MRCC and INSCO
- Assess and update systems and/or methods enhancing processes for long-term sustainability
- Monitor and support internal communications, including recording meeting minutes, conducting post-meeting follow-ups, and scheduling meetings
- Coordinate external communications and task delegation using systems such as Asana, SmartSheet, Microsoft Teams, and email
- Disseminate relevant climate data, information, tools, resources, and climate science to stakeholders at in-person and virtual events, including staffing information booths and giving presentations.
- Collaborate with office staff on projects to complete additional work requests and funding opportunities
- Write climate-related articles and other written communications, as requested
- Event coordination, including client engagement, logistics, and office activities
- Routinely inspect Purdue Mesonet data and report erroneous values through Smartsheet
- Create and track invoices and purchases
What We're Looking For:
- Detail-oriented
- Internship or a minimum of six months of entry-level experience in climate data services, outreach, and/or weather station fieldwork
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software
- Strong written and oral communication
- Bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science, climatology, or related field
- Organization
