Job Description
The La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI, San Diego, California) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, with academic rank to be determined in accordance with the candidate’s experience and productivity. We are seeking creative faculty, addressing major immunological questions, performing rigorous science, and eager to engage with our collaborative faculty. The research should have a tangible connection to immunology, but it could pertain either to a major question that is intrinsically immunological or to a broader biological question relevant in an immunological setting. LJI has a strong research focus in human health and human diseases. We are interested in applicants from any area of immunology and we particularly welcome applicants with research emphasis on autoimmunity, cancer immunology, inflammation, or infectious diseases, as well as the specific areas of sex-based immunological differences, engineering immunity, or neuroimmunology.
LJI is an independent not-for-profit research institute. The institute offers a superb broad-based research environment spanning cellular immunology, infectious disease immunology, genetics, epigenetics, molecular biology, structural biology, developmental immunology, adaptive immunity, innate immunity, and human immunology. Our faculty research diversity is one of our greatest strengths. New hires will have access to outstanding colleagues and graduate students affiliated with degree-granting programs. LJI scientific cores, including flow cytometry, sequencing, microscopy, and clinical core are all world-class.
LJI was rated as the top workplace in academia by The Scientist magazine’s survey of postdocs and is consistently rated as a Best Workplace in San Diego. Numerous faculty are world leaders in their scientific areas and have been recipients of national and international awards. LJI has a focused mission and limits bureaucratic impediments, therefore providing an optimal environment for faculty scientific productivity. The institute is located on the UC San Diego campus and has close interactions with many neighboring academic institutions and the local pharmaceutical and biotechnology community.
Candidates must hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree and must have an outstanding record of scientific ability demonstrated by a strong publication record. Applicants should electronically submit a single attachment that includes (1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) a statement detailing one’s approach to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (up to 1 page), (4) a research statement including highlighted research accomplishments and proposed research program (up to 3 pages), and (5) contact information for three references. Questions related to the position can be sent to [email protected].
Review of applications will begin September 1st 2023 and will continue until the positions are filled.
LJI provides Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment, and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type, regardless of race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, marital status, disability status, genetics, medical conditions, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, reproductive health decisions, or pregnancy, or any other condition protected by state and local laws. This applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruitment, hiring, placing, training, promotion, compensation, benefits, transfers, educational assistance, terminations, layoffs, recalls, transfers, leaves of absences, and social and recreational programs.
With over 30 different countries represented, diversity is respected and celebrated at LJI. We are committed to ensuring a safe and compassionate environment that is equal, just, and fair. Science and discovery benefit from a diversity of talents, a diversity of approaches, and a diversity of perspectives. The La Jolla Institute’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative is designed to help us identify areas at the Institute that need improvement so we can together create an environment that is inclusive, provides equal opportunities, and opens doors that propel our research for human health.
La Jolla Institute is committed to compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable. We validate this commitment by conducting regular market analyses to remain competitive with organizations of similar size in the nonprofit, independent research sector. Compensation decisions consider a variety of factors including experience, education, unique skill sets, organizational need, and internal equity.
