Role Overview
CEG Digital wishes to engage the services of an Online Tutor for their MA Illustration course run in partnership with Falmouth University.
Online Tutors play a central role in the day-to-day success and vibrancy of the university’s online courses and are a consistent presence in the modules to which they are assigned and are usually the first point of contact for academic queries from students. Each Online Tutor will have a group of up to 30 students.
This is a flexible, part-time role and it is estimated that during a typical week, each student group may need approximately ten hours of online tutoring, although flexibility is required in order to accommodate busy periods such as assessment. Note that there will be key dates and contact points you will be required to adhere to which are driven by assessment dates in the course calendar. Full details will be provided prior to the start of the module.
The Course
The MA in Illustration (online) celebrates the role that illustration plays within a global context providing opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the diversity of practice that increasingly defines the subject in the 21st century. Taught online, it allows them to connect, engage and network with peers on a global level, offering a learning experience that reflects trends within contemporary professional practice today. It aims to develop creative practitioners who are able to explore new and innovative approaches to visual communication and reflects an increasing interest in the practice of illustration. The course recognises its position as one of the most important forms of visual communication.
The Module
This module examines the role of ‘storytelling’ within visual communication across all contexts. Students will consider different approaches to sequential storytelling such as linear narrative, multiple narrative, narrative structure, plot types, counterpoint, character development, pace and flow and the concept of the passage of time within a narrative context. This module is also central to student understanding of the interrelationship between practice and theory (praxis) and its connection to the challenges, responsibilities and opportunities visual storytelling provides.
A collaborative project will introduce the importance of generating a creative methodology to effectively communicate narrative through visual means. Through a critical essay, students will then analyse and critically reflect on different formats for visual narrative and how the natures of these different formats impact on narrative delivery; including children’s books, graphic novels, comics, online, gaming, apps, creative writing, storyboarding.
Finally, while developing their own visual narrative on a socially driven issue, students will explore the social context, cultural and/or cognitive requirements involved in communicating with their intended audience. This will be developed as a portfolio submission that brings together theory and practice.
Throughout this module learning activities, dynamic interactions and discussions will enhance student understanding of the myriad approaches to narrative illustration and sequential imagery. Students will develop an increasingly sophisticated and articulate critical voice with regards to these themes, and demonstrate the ability to critically justify the work they produce.
