The Position

We currently have an opening for an OMC (Operations Maintenance Coordinator) Paper Machines Assistant Superintendent based out of our location in Port Townsend, Washington. As an OMC Paper Machines Assistant Superintendent, you will assist in the management of paper machine operations and activities. Establish and meet production department goals for safety, housekeeping, productivity, product quality, operator training, employee development and costs. The OMC Paper Machines Assistant Superintendent will work under the direction of the Paper Machine Superintendent.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works with engineering department to replace/upgrade equipment.
  • Produces a product that meets all customer’s specifications.
  • Performs daily paper machine rounds to assess and improve equipment performance and reliability.
  • Reviews and analyzes all operating results, including quality, efficiencies, and costs, determining appropriate actions to maintain favorable and correct unfavorable trends.
  • Assists in the management of front-line supervisors, as needed. This would include performance appraisals, professional development, coaching and mentoring.
  • Owns and executes the housekeeping improvement plan.
  • Covers for the Paper Machine Superintendent in their absence and ability to meet their duties as assigned.
  • Assists, as needed, in handling of labor relation issues including grievances and disciplinary actions.
  • Assists with staffing schedules and managing personnel.
  • Interacts with the operators daily to ensure they are operating safely and effectively.
  • Develops and trains employees to certify on job performance and process knowledge.
  • Supervises all production and quality activities when on call for weekend duty.
  • Holds team accountable for achieving targeted results.
  • Demonstrates safety as a core value and establishes a safe working environment by actively leading the safe execution of work and in identifying/eliminating hazards.
  • Works beyond “normal” work schedule as necessary to fulfill position responsibilities.
  • Assists the paper machine superintendent in developing, recommending, and implementing budgets, long-range plans, capital expenditures and other managerial programs to support the paper machine department.
  • Provides technical direction and expertise to develop equipment, materials, maintenance, and operating procedures for effective operations.
  • Participates in department and mill initiatives for improving safety.
  • Works closely with the Operations Maintenance Coordinator in leading and managing all maintenance activities for the Paper Machine Department to include day-to-day maintenance jobs, scheduled downs, and planning cycles.
  • Effectively works with chemical vendors and equipment suppliers to optimize paper machine performance.

  • Contributes to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the impact on Paper Machine activities.
  • Contributes to the creation and implementation of best practice in line with the Paper Machine vision, strategy policies, processes, and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.

Interpersonal/Work Relationship Skills

  • Works with all levels in department from direct supervision of operators to Paper Machine Superintendent but also works with all levels outside the department from operators/maintenance personnel up through the General Manager.
  • Administers labor agreement, works with Human Resources and Union representatives.

Required Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pulp and Paper, Engineering, or related field.

Required Experience

  • 5 years or more of direct paper manufacturing experience.
  • Experience working in a team environment with a union contract.
  • Proven leadership with the ability and interest to progress to the Superintendent position.

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a production environment.
  • The employee is exposed to shop elements such as noise, dust, fumes, and odors.

Physical Requirements

  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, climb and/or balance, to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, enter confined spaces, scale heights, is exposed to extreme temperatures, and the needs to have the ability lift up to 50lbs.

Employment Terms

  • Full-time employees receive 160 hours of sick leave upon hire then earn eight hours of sick leave per month.
  • Retirement plan.
  • 2 weeks paid vacation or more depending on position.
  • Full time, Exempt position, with overtime as required.
  • 9 paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
  • Salary range: $120,000 - $150,000 DOE.

  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
