We are seeking a qualified Offshore Marine Biologist to support our Pacific Coast Offshore Wind & Submarine Cable Programs. Our Offshore Marine Biologist will conduct impact assessment/permitting support, marine field survey support, and data management/reporting.


This is a remote position, and our candidate can be located in California, Hawaii, Oregon and/or Washington.


We are looking for a candidate with a multidisciplinary science-based background with an emphasis on marine biology, marine mammals, fisheries, seabirds, or benthic resources.


Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a marine biologist subject matter expert (SME) for impact assessment, permitting, surveys, and monitoring associated with offshore energy projects.
  • Routine coordination with project teams composed of Project Managers, SMEs, and Client Representatives.
  • Perform desktop-based data analysis, impact assessment, and report writing.
  • Support Tetra Tech’s Pacific Coast Offshore Energy sector by providing on-the-ground regulatory and scientific advice and leadership to Project Managers, SMEs, and Client Representatives.
  • Support Tetra Tech’s Offshore Energy Program to provide comprehensive environmental, engineering, and operational support to marine and coastal clients.
  • Provide technical expertise as needed for proposals offshore energy projects.
  • Provide QA/QC and expert review of documents and analyses for permits, NEPA assessments, and other environmental compliance for offshore energy projects as needed.
  • Support statistical analyses and modeling exercises to meet U.S. marine statutory needs.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science/Environmental Science, Policy, or related field.
  • 6-10 years of professional experience in environmental consulting/energy market with direct experience with wind energy.
  • 6-10 years of experience serving as a SME on marine biology impact assessment, marine acoustics, permitting, NEPA, or essential fish habitat assessments.
  • Deep understanding of marine fisheries, marine mammals, seabirds, benthic resources and/or sea turtles, including relevant policies and regulations.
  • Familiarity with, and analysis of, publicly available commercial fisheries catch and landings datasets.
  • Familiarity with methods used to interpret and map benthic habitat features from high-resolution geophysical survey data (e.g., multibeam, side scan sonar, etc.) and other underwater imagery (images collected from drop-down cameras and towed-video).
  • Understanding of marine spatial planning, commercial/recreational fishing regulations, Essential Fish Habitat, Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard, National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management offshore wind survey recommendations.
  • Experience with boat-based marine resource surveys and understanding of fish, benthic, and water quality monitoring equipment.
  • Track record of preparing and conducting deliverables that meet established budget and schedule.
  • Strong technical writing capabilities.
  • Experience in preparation of proposals, budget estimates and schedules for projects / work packages preferred.
  • Experience with standard statistical packages, such as R and Matlab, and/or GIS software is a plus.
  • Ability to utilize a taxonomic key and identify common marine, estuarine, and freshwater fish species in the Pacific Coast Region of the U.S.
  • High level of motivation and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess solid communication skills and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and ArcGIS (desired).
  • A Pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science/Environmental Science, Policy, or related field highly preferred 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Understanding of the regulatory and study relationships of interconnects and submarine cable landfalls.
  • Strong written, verbal communication skills as well as leadership of technical teams.
  • Strong technical and regulatory policy background consistent with understanding BOEM Permitting submittals and state regulatory policies.
  • Experience with applied science in the Offshore Wind market, including overseeing studies, surveys and permitting in support of BOEM, SAP and COP submittals.

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $150,000 yr.
