Your Job

The Graduate Medical Education Resident is responsible for all aspects of GME including policies and programs covering the program. The GME Resident Supports and promotes the vision, mission, and strategic plans of Methodist Health System

The Methodist Health System (MHS) Graduate Medical Education (GME) Department provides training, in association and cooperation with its affiliated participating institution, in graduate medical education programs that meet the standards established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and its Residency Review Committees, American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Fellowship Council (FC). Completion of the training generally qualifies the participant for certification by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or AOA.

Your Job Requirements

  • Detail oriented, logical, and methodological approach to problem solving
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • All participants in graduate medical education programs sponsored by MHS GME must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the ACGME Institutional Requirements, AOA Institutional Requirements, the FC Institutional Requirements and the Texas Medical Board.
  • Strong process orientation
  • Demonstrated capability to interface and maintain effective relationships with all departments and employees in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong proficiency using Microsoft Office products

Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification: Current BLS certification is required for all new trainees and must be maintained throughout the duration of your training program. This typically can be obtained from your medical school. Please upload a copy of your certificate, in MedHub before your official start date. The certificate must include one full year of eligibility.

Your Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Be engaged and eager to build a winning team
  • Build relationships to promote a collaborative environment
  • Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.
  • Perform procedures, which are specified by each program director, under the direct supervision of attending physician. Resident may only perform those procedures for which the attending physician has privileges. Once the resident has performed the appropriate number of procedures in a competent fashion the program director will provide notification that the resident is eligible to be certified to perform the procedure without supervision.
  • Communicate effectively with their supervising attending regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis.
  • Take initiative for your professional growth
  • Be accountable for your performance
  • Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to resident’s level of education, ability and experience. The program director, the attending STAFF and the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) will determine the resident’s level of responsibility and autonomy.
  • Communicate clearly and openly
  • Develop a personal program of learning to foster continued professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.
  • Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by their discipline under the direct supervision of the attending staff. Residents may write orders and progress notes in patient charts, although attending physicians retain responsibility for the care of patients seen by residents and must review the care of their patients.
  • Always look for ways to improve the patient experience
