Job Summary:
The Department of Perioperative Services, Operating Room at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking an hourly/per diem Nursing Assistant 1.
The Nursing Assistant 1 is an entry level position, and performs basic patient care duties under direction of a nurse, physician, or other clinician. The Nursing Assistant 1 may assist Nursing Assistants 2, physicians, nurses in the performance of care functions. Incumbents at this level receive in-service training in a limited number of care procedures, leading to eligibility to qualify for appointment to Nursing Assistant 2. Additionally, the successful candidate may:
- Utilize effective skills in communicating with members of the health care team.
- Perform indirect nursing care activities as determined by routine assignment as well as unit activity.
- Demonstrate knowledge of normal growth and development in the delivery of care to patients.
- Respond to the changing care needs of patient care areas.
- Maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
- Participate in Quality Improvement activities.
- Use problem-solving in meeting patient care and unit needs.
- Ensure decisions and actions are guided by ethical principles.
- Participate in activities to promote and foster team spirit and boost unit morale.
- Take an active role in personal and professional development.
- Perform direct nursing care as delegated.
- Obtain, record, and exchange information on behalf of the patient.
- Foster and maintain positive public relations with patients, families, visitors, and staff.
Addendum for Nurse Aides in Emergency Department:
- Place new patients on the T-System triage board.
- Perform pre-triage functions under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Identify and place armbands displaying full name and date of birth on all newly triaged patients.
- Inform the triage nurse or charge nurse of any abnormal vital signs, patients who c/o chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
- Obtain vital signs for all walk-in and ambulance triage patients as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Civil Service non-competitive: possession of or ability to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities during the probationary period.
- Demonstrate strong written, verbal, arithmetic, and comprehension skills.
