Job Description


The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022 to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). We are seeking a Nurse Supervisor to join the team at the Glenwood Resource Center (GRC) in Glenwood, which offers a continuum of care to Iowans experiencing intellectual disabilities. This position is eligible for a $5,000 retention payment for every six months of commitment. This position is also eligible for a $1,500 retention payment for every 7 pay periods (14 weeks) of commitment. Speak to the hiring manager for more information on eligibility.


Some Job Duties Include


This position provides supervision and short-term planning to assure nursing care is consistent with standards of practice.


  • Provides direction, guidance, and clinical supervision to licensed nurses and certified medication aides, as well as direct support staff, in the provision of health care services for the facility. Assures nursing personnel provide care that is consistent with current professional standards of practice, federal and state regulations, and agency/facility/departmental policies, procedures, and protocols. Collaborates with nurse supervisors to organize work activities and make staffing assignments to meet organizational and departmental goals in an efficient and effective manner. Responds to emergency situations.
  • Supervises and evaluates the work of all assigned licensed nursing personnel. Clearly communicates performance expectations. Prepares employee development plans to address performance improvement/professional development needs. Participates in the interview process and recommends personnel action in selection, disciplinary process, performance evaluation, leave requests, work schedules and assignments, as well as the grievance process. Provides functional supervision for health care activities delegated to unlicensed personnel (i.e., certified medication aides, direct support staff), and collaborates with appropriate non-clinical supervisory personnel to address performance issues related to provision of health care activities by unlicensed staff. Assures subordinate nursing personnel are current in required training, qualified, and competent, and possess the ability to perform assigned work.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement activities at the facility and work site levels, collecting data and preparing written reports as assigned, participating in the development and delivery of training, etc. Performs quality assurance activities through regular review and monitoring of work completed by nursing service personnel. Participates in the nursing peer review process. Communicates with subordinate personnel regarding the facility Outcomes & Analysis Report. Attends seminars, conferences, and other training events to stay current in nursing practice standards, keep abreast of current research and evidence-based practice. Maintains current RN licensure, basic life support certification, and other required continuing education activities. Completes Mandatory Reporter of Dependent Adult and Child Abuse as required by Iowa Code.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary treatment teams, work groups, nursing service teams, and committee meetings as assigned. Participates as a member of the nursing management team, assisting with planning and implementation of nursing policies, procedures and protocols. Effectively communicates with subordinates, superiors, and interdisciplinary treatment team members, and coordinates activities with other departments to assure a smooth workflow.

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Minimum Qualification Requirements


Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


  • One year of full-time professional clinical work experience in a correctional environment or in any combination of nursing specialty areas including epidemiology, geriatrics, maternal and child health, nursing education, pediatrics, public health, mental health or psychiatrics, or intellectual disability; and
  • Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator’s Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing; and
  • All of the following (a, b, and c):

  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in nursing equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing; and
