JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Marin General Hospital Anesthesiologists the Nurse Practitioner (PAT) will perform activities that prepare patients for safe entry into the hospital for surgical, invasive, or special procedures, either as an outpatient or inpatient. These activities include the assessment of patient's current health status, as well as providing education to patients of all ages along with their families.
In an environment of continuous quality improvement, Nurse Practitioner (PAT) is responsible for the oversight of care for any patient requiring pre-admission testing and oversight of pre-surgery testing of patients for outpatient surgery and same day surgery. Nurse Practitioner (PAT) is to work in accordance with our vison -to create a caring, competent, and compassionate patient and family-based environment for the pre-operative patient experience.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Accredited School of Nursing -Nurse Practitioner (MSN) Required
- Possession of a current active California RN license
EXPERIENCE
Two years (1040 hours per year) experience within the last three years’ direct patient care in either a pre, peri- or post-operative setting
- 2 Years Nursing- Nurse Practitioner- Perioperative and/or
- Healthcare - Perioperative/Surgical Services Preferred
- Healthcare - Acute Care Nursing Preferred
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
- Excellent communication skills with ability to read, write, and follow English verbal and written instructions
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to manage projects independently, functioning autonomously, and take initiative to problem solve
- Ability to compile, analyze, and disseminate data collected that impacts patient care protocol
- Ability to project positive attitude and appearance and to promote good public relations
- Excellent teaching skills
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with patient team members, internal departments, and external resources
- Ability to complete a large volume of work, managing prioritizing multiple tasks
- Clinical expertise to effectively assess, coordinate, implement, and evaluate all services required to meet the needs of the patient. Strong knowledge base relative to surgery procedures and management of the surgical patient
- Computer software skills in a Windows environment
- Ability to process facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution
LICENSE and REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
- Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License -California Board Registered Nursing Required
- Current California RN license
- BLS- Basic Life Support –American Heart Association Certification Required
PATIENT PRIVACY (HIPAA Compliance)

This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL (not modifiable)
- Assessment Skills- Obtains necessary medical history, assuring accurate assessment of patient's conditions/needs. Performs accurate and complete physical exams in accordance with established protocols. Integrates history and physical findings with clinical knowledge to adequately screen patients' pre procedure. Communicates medical assessment to patient and attending physician as needed. Incorporates the information from the unit-specific equipment manual in providing safe patient care. Provides care appropriate to the patient population.
- Pre-procedure, Intra-procedure, and Post Procedure Duties- Performs comprehensive pre-procedure assessments on behalf of the anesthesia department and writes appropriate pre-procedure orders, including history and physical of pediatric and adult patients. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all office equipment and procedures. Demonstrates competence in all routine office procedures. Works effectively with all office staff to ensure patient safety and comfort. Writes appropriate post procedure orders. Follows up on patient complications as appropriate. Completes all documentation in a timely fashion.
- Clinical Judgment and Decision Making- Assesses a situation, considers alternatives, and chooses appropriate course of action in accordance with delineation privileges. Reports all unusual circumstances to physician and/or anesthesiologist and seeks guidance and direction as necessary. Selectively orders only diagnostic tests pertinent to clinical situation. Interprets diagnostic tests appropriately. Instructs and counsels patients, taking into consideration the patient's mental and physical condition. Functions in a calm manner during a stressful, emergency, or crisis. Practices within the scope of Delineation of Privileges and scope of Licensure.
- Clinical Resource for Staff, Preceptor Role, and Quality Assurance- Serves as clinical resource for staff. Provides staff training for new procedures and protocols as directed. Assists with the development of documentation and forms for procedures. Serves as preceptor for new mid -level staff. Provides direct training and supervision as needed. Ensures that competency documentation procedures are followed.
- Documentation Abilities - Documents and reports clearly and concisely. Records appropriate information pertaining to patient histories and physical ls and physician orders. Completes all medical record documentation in a timely manner. Possesses appropriate knowledge of hospital forms. Writes legibly with appropriate use of abbreviations.
