JOB SUMMARY:
Provides Diagnostic Ultrasound examinations to patients under the general supervision of the Medical Chief of Radiology. The Ultrasound Tech typically will provide these types of examinations: Abdominal, peripheral vascular, Doppler, OB/Gyn, small parts, and guidance for needle biopsy. The job requires that the Ultrasound Tech exercise mature and independent judgment. Ultrasound Tech may be assigned duties of an instructor in areas of demonstrated expertise. Ultrasound Tech III is responsible for maintaining ACR accreditation for the vascular lab.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. An Associate of Science (A.S.) degree is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE
Five years’ full time experience as a paid Ultrasound Tech in an acute care facility is required. Ability to competently perform all the examinations listed in the job summary.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
- Ability to interact with general public, clients, staff and referring physicians with diplomacy, tact and goodwill
- Technical ability to perform all diagnostic Ultrasound examinations as outlined in the MGH Diagnostic Imaging Services department policy and procedure manual
- Able to communicate effectively with patients who are under stress
- Ability to participate in department team quality improvement activities
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Radiologic Vascular Technologist (RVT)
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certificate (ARDMS)
- BLS-HP certification
- CRT and ARRT preferred

PATIENT PRIVACY (HIPAA Compliance):
Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL
- Assists Radiologists with performance of Amniocenteses, cyst aspiration, thorancetesis, drainage, etc. Performs first aid as necessary
- Uses effective critical thinking skills in order to implement alternative methods when problems arise so that satisfactory solutions are achieved
- Selects appropriate equipment to perform exam. Selects appropriate technical factors to optimize image quality. Records images with proper patient identification. Records images on film and other archival media. Annotates images accurately
- Serves on committees as assigned by Director of Imaging Services
- Effectively explains exam to patient in order to elicit cooperation and reduce apprehension. Assists patient in positioning for optimal exam results
- Reviews patient medical history and results of previous diagnostic studies. Integrates knowledge of patient history with examination to be performed
- Knowledgeable about equipment down-time procedures for Radiology Information System
- Competently uses universal precautions when working with patients in isolation status and in sterile surgery. Practices sterile technique as required. Prevents cross contamination. Maintains a clean procedure area. Cleans equipment as needed
- Performs special projects at the request of Radiological Technologist III/IV or Director of Diagnostic Imaging Services
- Maintains ACR accreditation for vascular lab
- Competently performs all sonographic examinations as outlined in the department policy and procedure manual
- Sends results to Radiologist for medical interpretation. May discuss findings with Radiologists for optimal interpretation
- May provide instruction to students of Radiological Technology and Ultrasound who are enrolled in an affiliated program
- Effectively responds to emergency situations. Able to integrate emergency work into regularly scheduled responsibilities
- Constantly promotes a positive and professional image in the hospital
- Effectively schedules and prioritizes work assignments for maximum productivity
- Ability to accurately troubleshoot ultrasound equipment in order to knowledgeably communicate need for repair to service personnel. Reports equipment failure to Radiological Technologist III in order to expedite repair and plan for appropriate patient triage. Keeps orderly equipment repair log books
- Attends and participates in department meetings
- Accurately uses hospital information system to process patient information
- Attends continuing education in order to maintain certification, licensure, and accreditation and clinical competencies
- Ability to take stand-by on call as assigned
- Provides for the safety, mental and physical comfort of the patient while performing ultrasound examinations
SECONDARY
Secures supplies and keeps exam room stock up to par level
