What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 $90,000 - $147,100
Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, HVAC, power quality, fluid/utility systems, power monitoring, critical power reliability/redundancy issues, renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Often in this role, engineers may perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs. Within this role, engineers will become familiar with pressure safety, leak testing requirements, piping supports, flow requirements, installing equipment on housekeeping pads or skids with the use of post-installed anchors, design cranes and crane girders/support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs. Additionally successful candidates may be expected to qualify as a Cognitive System Engineer (CSE) on one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) that support LANL Nuclear Facilities.

In addition to the description above, engineers in this position will work alongside junior and senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Awareness of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Awareness of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.
  • Awareness of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, IMC, IEBC, ASME, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.

Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.
Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineering certification.
  • Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
  • Awareness of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Where You Will Work
Successful candidates will be working within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division. The PFE Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. The Nuclear Facilities Engineer position is assigned to one of the PFE Division Groups that perform Conduct of Engineering (CoE) program implementation at Technical Area 55 and other Chemistry and Waste Facilities under the responsibility of the TA55 Facilities Operations Director.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
