A Protective Force Officer (PFO) is the most visible contributor within the NREL Community to detecting, deterring, and denying threats and hazards in support of a safe and supportive work environment. This position is located within the NREL Office Laboratory Protection (LP) Operations group. NREL is a free-flow campus with staff and visitors regularly checking in at our gates and buildings. Though non-armed, PFOs utilize de-escalation tactics to mitigate threats and ensure safety. PFOs respond to emergencies and incidents, and using a customer service approach, see them through to recovery and reconstitution of normal operations. PFOs are an integral part of the NREL campus providing security and emergency preparedness protection services in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and contractual requirements.
No matter the position, PFOs conduct security and response operations by:
  • Responding to alarms and emergencies by investigating and assessing the situation, and providing appropriate support and solutions to each situation
  • Providing assistance to people in need
  • Monitoring and authorizing entrance of vehicles or people into NREL facilities
  • Ensuring facilities are secure (locks, doors, windows, controlled access areas, etc.)
  • Investigating people and vehicles for suspicious activity or possessions
  • Deterring, detecting and denying unauthorized personnel access to NREL facilities
  • Interacting in a professional manner with the NREL Community, guests and visitors
  • Providing support and assistance to the NREL Community as well as to outside federal and state response agencies
  • Patrolling NREL premises regularly to maintain order and establish a supportive presence
  • Utilizing surveillance cameras and alarms to identify disruptions or unlawful acts
  • Submitting reports of incidents, observations, shift reports, and daily activities
  • Performing as a member of a team for each of the three (3) shifts, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week
This is a PFO 1 Position with openings available Shift 1 (Night Shift):
  • Position eligible for overtime and training.
  • SHIFT 1 (11:00pm-7:30m)
The Mission Essential Task List (METL) is a list of essential tasks required for LP’s protection and response services that are based upon fundamental protection objectives and site-specific protection plans to defend against a wide range of threats and hazards. METL is designed to establish unity of purpose and effort and to ensure operational efficiencies. LP has six mission essential tasks.

Key tasks and areas of responsibility include:
  • Additional duties, as assigned and required in support of overall mission objectives
  • Minimize impact, promptly report, and respond to security and emergency incidents in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Monitor and enforce NREL policies and procedures and DOE Orders.
  • Report writing including daily activities, unusual occurrences, and incidents.
  • Maintain good working relationships with our customers (DOE) and stakeholders (NREL)
  • Interface routinely with staff, management, and visitors.
  • Provide security and emergency preparedness protection services.
  • Operate CCTV electronic surveillance security system.
  • Follow Emergency Notification System (ENS) sheets to facilitate notification and internal/external response.
  • Perform functions related to security, emergency preparedness, and response on a day-to-day basis.
  • Conduct vehicle and foot patrol activities to observe and report.
Should an offer be made, employment is contingent upon:
  • Pre-employment (background investigation, which may include Social Security trace, Sex Offender, Federal & State Criminal, Motor Vehicle Record, Education Verification, and drug screen).
  • Medical evaluation and certification, as well as behavioral health screen, in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR Part 1046
  • Proof of a valid and current operators license for a motor vehicle
  • Ability to obtain a credential in accordance with the requirements of Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, including an additional National Agency Checks with Indices background investigation and fingerprinting

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 or more years of experience or equivalent related security education/experience. Or, related Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope or equivalent related security education/experience.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent team and interpersonal skills preferred
  • Ability to monitor CCTV and electronic surveillance systems
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic project administration skills with the ability to prioritize work
  • Excellent judgment
  • Intermediate skills in applicable software packages and office equipment (Microsoft Office products: Outlook, Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel).

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Specialist II / Annual Salary Range: $37,300 - $59,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
