Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This Permanent, Part-Time position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Springfield, Oregon. Part-time salary is $1,773 mo/$20.46 hr.
What you will do:
The Wildlife Field Biologist will assist the District Wildlife Biologist in planning, directing, and coordinating activities related to wildlife habitat, population inventory, damage control, harvest, research, and public education within the South Willamette Watershed District. Major duties and responsibilities are to:
  • Work with landowners on the resolution of wildlife damage complaints. Discuss options for preventative and remedial measures for damage control. Inspect damage and issue haze or kill permits when appropriate. Extend or exchange Landowner Preference tags, or issue deer and elk damage tags to address damage problems. Coordinate with Wildlife Services, Oregon State Police, and Sheriff's Departments regarding cougar and bear conflict. Record damage complaints and create monthly annual damage summaries. Capture wildlife for relocation when appropriate. Use firearms to haze or kill nuisance wildlife.

  • Conduct biological surveys on various species of wildlife, including game mammals, game birds, furbearers, and nongame species. Information obtained is used in management decisions (hunting season regulations, habitat manipulation, and identification of other needs). Determine areas for surveys, design, and implement surveys.

  • Collect teeth, reproductive tracts, or other parts from harvested animals for biological studies or disease testing. Summarize survey information and make recommendations for population protection and management. Capture wildlife for studies. Euthanize sick or injured wildlife with firearms or capture using chemical immobilization.

  • Provide information and education to the public. Answer inquiries from hunters, landowners, and the public. Provide interpretation of department regulations. Address public concerns and complaints. Provide information to and answer questions from the media. Participate in public involvement meetings. Give presentations to hunter, conservation, and other community groups.
  • Manage harvest of game species and furbearers. Participate in the design and preparation of proposals for harvest seasons and regulations. Participate in district and region regulations meetings. Conduct hunter checks to collect biological and harvest information. Record and relay information on fish and wildlife regulation violations to the Oregon State Police. Check and tag harvested cougar, bear, bobcat, and otter. Collect teeth and reproductive tracts from harvested animals as required by regulations. Work with land management agencies to design and implement cooperative road closures.

  • Protect, maintain, and enhance wildlife habitat. Recommend measures for the consideration of wildlife by land management agencies. Review development proposals and recommend measures to minimize or mitigate impacts to wildlife. Provide information on the needs of wildlife to regulatory agencies. Provide advice to private landowners on wildlife habitat needs. Assist landowners with development of Wildlife Habitat Conservation Management Plans and determine landowner compliance of plans.

  • Develop and administer volunteer projects. Supervise volunteers and complete volunteer activity reports.

  • Manage data and information. Set-up data files and data entry. Analyze, summarize, and tabulate data. Develop and/or use population simulation and habitat effectiveness models. Prepare special reports. Prepare monthly reports, monthly timesheets, mileage reports, and expense claims.

Working Conditions:
  • Occasional work and driving in remote locations on adverse terrain in inclement weather.
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • This position has been designated as sensitive in that the incumbent in this position has access to confidential/fiscal-related information. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting. Continued employment is contingent upon passing the criminal history background check.
  • This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting to verify s/he may legally possess a firearm before using a firearm. Continued employment is contingent upon passing the criminal history background check.
  • Required to work occasional weekends, holidays and evenings, including seasonal night work such as fall and spring deer herd composition surveys.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Required to operate vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions and 4-wheel drive vehicles during the day or at night.
  • Requires occasional work in aircraft including helicopters and small fixed-wing planes.
  • Requires physical ability to travel, on foot, in all types of terrain and weather.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Wildlife or Fisheries Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; OR

  • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.
Requested Skills/Experience:
  • Writing progress reports, technical reports, or data summaries.
  • Working directly with other biologists or stakeholders to coordinate research or monitoring studies.
  • Speaking in public and making presentations.
  • Investigating potential wildlife caused livestock depredation.
  • Providing recommendations for habitat protection while working with natural resource agencies, private landowners, local governments, and Non-governmental organizations.
  • Evaluating biological data and making management and hunting season recommendations.
  • Designing and implementing wildlife sampling and monitoring activities.
  • Assisting private landowners with wildlife caused agricultural damage.
