About this position:
We are seeking a highly skilled Metal Fabricator to join our trades’ team with the Technical Facilities Management (TFM) unit. This position is responsible for repairing equipment, buildings, machinery and vehicles. This position requires that the person know how to interpret drawings and specifications and be able to lay-out work using blueprints, schematics along with manuals. Technical guidelines and metal fabrication work procedures are used in deciding how to repair or fabricate a piece of equipment. Knowledge of metal working skills as well as advanced knowledge of construction and maintenance of a variety of machines is required. This position reports directly to the Plumbers Crew Chief.

Job Responsibilities

You will be successful in this role if you have demonstrated expertise in:
  • Shaping, punching, drilling and securing metal parts, cages, steel decks, trusses, machinery foundations, brackets and hand guard rails.
  • Preparing preliminary cost estimates of materials and labor for specific tasks when needed.
  • Welding using arc, carbon arc, metallic inert gas, tungsten inert gas and oxygen acetylene processes on a variety of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Designing, laying out and fabricating a variety of sheet metal ducts, guards, doors and flashings for heating/ventilating/air conditioning systems, machinery, cages, buildings and roofs, etc.
  • Coordinating work activities with other skilled trades depending upon work task.
  • Performing preventive maintenance and repair of small engines (i.e. Electric Scooters, Backpack Blowers, Diesel Pressure Washer/Generators.
  • Interpreting drawings, specifications and lay-outs; marking dimensions, angles, cutouts on metal plates and pipe.
  • Inspecting playground equipment, acting as the department Certified Playground Safety Inspector.
  • Suggesting different/better ways to manage and maintain equipment to supervisor.
  • Fabrication and repair of brackets, frames, pump installations, tanks, piping, panels, tools, shafts and related mechanical equipment.
  • Repairing piping for boilers and chilled water systems.
  • Communicating and coordinating with the crew chief and the campus team for support as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a journey-level status in structural iron, sheet metal or metal fabrication, layouts, repair, welding or burning or four years as a metal trades helper under a metal trades journey worker (or a combination of education and/or apprentice training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
  • This position will serve as the department Certified Playground Safety Inspector. This is an integral part of Seattle Centers metal campus operations and responsibilities. A Playground Safety Inspector Certification is required (or obtained during the first 12 months of employment).

License, Certification and Other Requirements:
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (within 12 month of employment)
  • Valid Washington State driver's license
You will be successful in this role if you:
  • Can organize work, solve medium to complex problems and manage competing and inflexible deadlines.
  • Can interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills with ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Can work within a diverse workforce and be effective in a team setting or alone after being given oral or written instructions.
  • Can work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Read and understand blueprints, manuals and schematics.

  • Possess the Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) Certification.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Required to handle or work with toxic/hazardous equipment and substances.
  • Must be able to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Must have ability to lift 50 pounds and may participate in work that requires frequent lifting of more than 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in cramped spaces as well as all heights.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $40.85 - $41.85 per hour.
