Job Description

We are seeking an ambitious, results driven sales professional to promote the positive aspects of Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce membership and secure new member revenue while also enhancing relations with current members.The successful candidate must be a willing and highly motivated new business prospector who possess excellent sales and communication skills.Factors for success in this key external-facing role include self-motivation, the ability to build relationships, time management, and drive to achieve established revenue goals.


The Membership Development Manager (MDM) manages all aspects of membership sales and member relations – with the critical objective to increase revenue (new member and investor sales, current member and investor up-grades, and sponsorship and advertising sales) while simultaneously enhancing member relations and retention.


The MDM’s primary role (75%) is to successfully increase new member, investor, and sponsorship sales revenue.The MDM is responsible for engaging with area business prospects, including outbound prospecting activities, active listening and drawing connections between each prospect’s needs and the specific Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce programs, resources and strategic initiatives that fit their circumstances.


Principal Responsibilities:

New Member Recruiting

Assures the goals set for new member revenue are met or exceeded via individual sales efforts targeted to those organizations who may benefit from Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce membership.

  • Identify prospective businesses and organizations throughout the greater Joplin area for use as sales leads.
  • Assess prospective member needs and motivations and make connections to the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce programs and resources that correlate to their organizational objectives.
  • The membership sales manager may be called upon, and would definitely find it advantageous, to attend Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce events and functions for recruitment purposes.
  • Consistently updates Joplin Chamber’s membership management system to include any contact made with prospective members.
  • Utilizes the Joplin Chamber’s standardized recruiting and selling processes to meet or exceed revenue goals.
  • Connect with prospective members through initial telephone and personal contact to establish positive relationships with business owners and executive leaders.
  • Responsible for maintaining a daily recruiting activity average of 40 telephone call attempts per day.


Member Relations

Utilizes the Joplin Chamber’s standardized member relations processes and techniques to maintain positive and professional relationships with assigned members so they see value and continue renewing each year, especially those whom the incumbent has recruited.

  • Actively upsell members to drive new revenue and deeper member engagement.
  • Oversee enrollment of new members and completion of new member welcome tasks.
  • Conduct relations calls with assigned members and educate them on the benefits of membership to ensure that their needs are being met.
  • Responsible for maintaining a daily member relations activity average of 10 telephone call attempts per day.
  • Fulfill assigned membership retention efforts including annual membership renewal invoicing, payment reminders, follow up, and dues collection.
  • Serve as the broker between members and Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce leadership and staff to achieve desired outcomes and drive retention goals.
  • Conduct new member follow-up calls to provide support and answer any questions they may have about the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.


Qualifications:

  • Strong computer and word-processing skills, including CRM software, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable mode of transportation for moderate local travel to various prospective member, current member, and business-related locations (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Resident within the greater Joplin area.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively with attention to details and quality.
  • Ability to write effective business correspondence, reports, and analyses.
  • Willingness to continually enhance the individual skills, abilities, and knowledge necessary for fulfilling the MDM role.
  • Ability to work both independently and in team settings.
  • Ability to work with myriad personality types in a congenial and respectful manner.
  • Ideally, three (3) plus years B2B sales and/or membership experience (or comparable experience) with demonstrated revenue generating abilities.
  • Ability to work efficiently with attention to details and quality of work produced.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, the business community and prospect members.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in setting priorities and organization of workload.
  • Demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential information and situations.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.
  • Active listener who can appreciate the needs of various companies and can suggest relevant ideas for how those organizations can benefit from Joplin Chamber involvement.


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to unpack and move supplies up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to read computer screens and mail, email, talk on the phone.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and attend events as required.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
