    This class is accountable for providing laboratory testing services to the hospital and community, primarily in the areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and coagulation. This position will work primarily in the Core Lab within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.


    THIS POSITION MAY BE FILLED AS MED TECH 1 OR 2.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction from the Core Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Manager, Core Laboratory Division Director or Department Head.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May exercise technical and functional supervision over technical and administrative support staff.

    SCHEDULE: Full time 80 hours every two weeks, evenings, Monday - Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., rotating weekends and holidays as required, may work 1st and 3rd shift to accommodate departmental needs per contract, 30-minute unpaid meal break, may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as required in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or work outside the normal assigned duties during an incident and/or emergency.


    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    • Performs other duties as required.
    • Maintains patient confidentiality;
    • Checks specimen labels for appropriateness/accuracy;
    • Performs antimicrobial susceptibility testing/level determinations, antibody titters and antigen detection to aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases;
    • Implements and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance;
    • Assists in preparing the department monthly report;
    • May work in other disciplines of the lab;
    • May obtain blood specimens from clients for examinations;
    • Participates in training of residents, students, fellows;
    • Reports test results; may interpret tests;
    • Performs techniques such as TLC, HPLC, GC, EMIT;
    • Conducts blood bank, chemistry, hematological, coagulation, bacteriological, immunological and serological examinations of blood, urine, gastric contents, spinal, amniotic fluid and other body fluids, exudates and transudates;
    • Performs florescence polarization and immunoassay;
    • Keeps records and inventory;
    • Performs general laboratory maintenance including preparation of solutions, tissue culture media and materials, sets up cells for tissue culture, prepares slides;
    • Assists physicians with procedures;

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:

    • Considerable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including computers;
    • Skill in performing mathematical computations;
    • Knowledge of scientific methods;
    • Knowledge of standard clinical laboratory procedures including safety practices;
    • Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;
    • Ability to work quickly and accurately under stressful conditions.
    • Considerable knowledge of various laboratory disciplines i.e.: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, biology, bacteriology, microbiology, serology, urinalysis, radioimmunoassay, etc.;

    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

    General Experience:

    Medical Technologist 1: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related field.


    Substitution Allowed: Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or related specialty from the ASCP Board of Certification or other acceptable certifying board may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.


    Medical Technologist 2: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, and two (2) years of Medical Technology experience.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must pass a visual color sampling test.
    • Must possess and maintain during employment certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or related specialty from the ASCP Board of Certification or other acceptable certifying board;


    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:

    • Experience with system software i.e.: Epic – Beaker , LIS, Siemens
    • Experience with other systems i.e.: Sysmex XN3000, IL TOP550, Abbott Architect Chemistry Nova 8, Sebia Hydrasys, Wallec Fluorometer

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Incumbents in this class are exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic and other hazardous substances.
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
    • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting and walking.
    • Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens and use of a microscope (light or fluorescent).
    • Ability to bend and reach in order to operate instrumentation
