Job Description
Overview:


WiredPeople is looking for a Medical Coder to join our public health teams. This role is part-time, 20 hours per week.


The ideal candidate is a high-energy individual with excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal communications.


Responsibilities:


  • Consult appropriate ICD manuals, source books, electronic manuals, and other documents to appropriately classify fetal death certificates when certificates contain illegible entities or use nontraditional terminology, lack required information, or use terms for which the ICD does not provide codes.
  • Accurately verifies work in compliance with complex instructions and rules and releases data without further review.
  • Use a high degree of judgment in interpreting physician/certifier entries on the certificate and applying appropriate rules accurately to arrive at an accurate classification.
  • Classifies, verifies and corrects medical diagnostic data reported on fetal death certificates received.
  • Serves as a resource on the classification of fetal death certificates in responding to jurisdiction inquiries and in the design and improvement of automated systems.


Qualifications:


  • Ability to use medical classification systems sufficient to compile and retrieve death certificate information and code disease processing and sequencing.
  • Knowledge of a comprehensive body of rules, medical reference books and manuals related to medical records activities, operations, and regulations.
  • Skill in applying most recent editions of ICD and Decision Support Tables to coding activities.
  • Practical knowledge of established medical classification procedures, regulations, and principles to carry out a variety of medical classification functions such as analysis, coding, quality assurance, and compiling data.
  • Ability to contribute to a group or team to establish performance improvement functions for data entry and processes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the structure and composition of the rule-based Decision Support System to include; application of decision rules coded, computer interface, and support manuals.
  • Knowledge or experience of ICD 10 coding to classify fetal causes of death.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy or physiology, and medical record classification systems coding techniques.
  • Minimum of one year experience in classifying multiple causes-of-death and determining an underlying cause-of-death.
  • Extensive knowledge of official coding conventions and guidelines established by NCHS and the World Health Organization (WHO).
