Job Description
What You Will Do
Come join the best and brightest minds in the world at one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions engaged in strategic science on behalf of U.S national security. The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world.
At the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), we use a one-of-a-kind linear accelerator to deliver protons at 84% the speed of light to special targets to make neutrons that are used for scientific and national defense applications.
We are seeking a hands-on mechanical engineering student to be part of a unique team to support design, analysis, maintenance, replacement, and operations of the high-power accelerator targets.
Depending on your experience level, you will help us with the following dynamic tasks:
  • Design, document, and create reports for heavy lift fixtures
  • Operate, maintain, and improve our cryogenic neutron moderator system
  • Operate, maintain, and improve our three radioactive water systems
  • Design tooling for our remote handling robot to be used for accelerator target disassembly

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Coachable: Demonstrated ability to positively take direction, read and follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, plans, emergency, safeguards, and security procedures.
  • Education: Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). Must be currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
  • Hands On: Please note that this position is very hands on. Must have knowledge of standard hand and power tools as well as the ability to use them proficiently.

Security: This position does not require a security clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Mechanical Engineering students preferred, but other disciplines will be considered.
  • Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools.
  • Excellent communication skills promoting a positive, professional, and ethical work behavior with peers.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and generate engineering drawings and reports and understand programmatic needs and priorities.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
