This unique opportunity is part of JPL's Mechanical Systems Engineering, Fabrication and Test Division that engages in research, technology development, and the creation of advanced mechanical, thermal, propulsion, and electronic packaging systems with expertise that spans the full breath of mechanical subject areas and is applied from architectural concept development through operations.

As a Mechanical Engineer II, you will be working for the Payload and Small Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section (355), which is responsible for the structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems engineering of payloads and small spacecraft across all phases of the mission lifecycle. In this role, you will:

• Develop configuration trades on the mechanical system of a space exploration project.
• Support mechanical engineering activities for payloads, instruments, and small spacecraft during mission phases including proposal, concept/system architecture development, detailed design/analysis, and production build/assembly.
• Collaborate with space science authorities, analysts, manufacturing engineers, and project staff.
• Create complex CAD models, assemblies and engineering drawings for the overall system
• Perform conceptual spacecraft, instrument or robotic design for feasibility and cost estimates of future missions.
• Perform as a Mechanical Design Engineer for JPL on a spacecraft, instrument or robotic project.

Required Skills:

• Extensive experience with the design and development of medium to large structures, deployable structures, or composite structures.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Acoustics or related technical subject area with a minimum of 3 years of related work experience; or a Master's degree in a related technical subject area with a minimum of 1 year of related work experience or PhD in a related technical subject area .
• Broad experience and knowledge in mechanical engineering, design, analysis, and verification of structures (spacecraft, payload, or instruments), mechanisms, or opto-mechanical assemblies.

Desired Skills:

• PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools such as Teamcenter, Enovia or Windchill.
• Creating engineering drawings using the ASME Y14.100-2017 standard.
• Aerospace material selection.
• PLM data management experience for product development.
• Aerospace fabrication processes.
• Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) using ASME Y14.5-2009.
• Teamcenter version 12 or higher PLM data management experience for product development
• Application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in solving mechanical engineering problems.
• Engineering CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools such as Siemens NX, CATIA or Creo.
• Extensive knowledge of Jet Propulsion Laboratory flight project practices and design principles, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations across a range of applications.
• Mechanical design of primary and secondary structures, mechanisms or optics.
• Creating detail drawings, assembly drawings, interface drawings and source control drawings.
• NX version 1953 or higher CAD modeling and drawing production skills.
• Broad experience and knowledge in the following areas:
• Adept at performing trade studies and developing conceptual configurations.
