Summary

Massage Therapists apply a variety of developed massage techniques to the soft tissue of the body to improve muscle tone and circulation. Massage Therapists work to enhance well-being and reduce the physical and mental effects of stress and tension. Massage Therapists agree to conduct their practices in an acceptable, ethical, and professional behavior.

This position has a minimum wage rate of $15.50 per hour plus receives commissions on services performed and tips from customers.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The incumbent will provide quality and professional service in administering various modalities of massage therapy, body treatments, and hydrotherapy treatments as outlined in protocols and standard operating procedures. Must be capable of providing all treatments on the spa service menu as per discipline and within the guidelines of state licensure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain all service standards as outlined by the Catalina Island Company regarding guest interaction, service delivery, and grooming/uniform standards
• Perform special projects delegated by the Lead Therapist, Spa Supervisor or Spa Director
• Maintain a working knowledge of all offerings of Catalina Island Company
• Maintain state licensure and/or certification
• Have a working knowledge of all services provided by Island Spa Catalina
• Adhere to all policies outlined in the Catalina Island Company Handbook
• Administer massage and body treatments to all spa guests as offered on the service menu and as per protocols and standard operating procedures
• Promote and sell enhancement services
• Adhere to all draping policies as set forth in Standard Operating Procedures and as dictated by the State of California
• Prepare and maintain the massage, body, and hydrotherapy treatment areas daily. Including but not limited to, disinfection, stock and supply, and reporting repairs and maintenance
• Promote and sell retail products
• Maintain overall cleanliness and neatness of the facility, including but not limited to soiled linen, refuse, dishes
• Adhere to department issued protocols for service delivery and product allocation
• Actively participate in trainings
• Adhere to all laws and guidelines relating to licensure within the State of California
• Ability to perform a minimum of 5 hours of service per shift

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED;
• Must have a minimum of 500 hours of Massage Therapy Education

Knowledge of:

• Two (2) years experience in massage therapy preferred
• Destination, luxury spa experience
• Knowledge of various modalities of body work including but not limited to Swedish, deep tissue, sports, reflexology, shiatsu

Ability to:

• Must be able to work weekends, nights, and holidays
• Ability to provide exceptional guest service
• Ability to work under pressure, maintain appointment schedule and appropriate guest service
• Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of body and hydrotherapy treatments i.e. exfoliation, Vichy shower, mask, and wraps
• Must have a desire to learn new techniques in the spa industry
• Demonstrate proficiency in all components of massage therapy i.e. anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, etc.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Licensure within the State of California
• CPR Certification (preferred)

• Strength, stamina, and mobility to perform a minimum of 5 service hours per shift
• Repetitive motion 60-100% of time
• Sustained visual and mental concentration 100% of time
• Standing, walking, pushing/pulling, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, speaking, and hearing 60-100% of time
• Protective equipment as needed
• A stimulating position with consistent communications with spa guests. Sometimes stressful with high volume of business

Environmental Elements

• Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise levels.
• Use of disinfectants, oils, essential oils, fragrances, elevated temperatures
• Close contact with general public
• Protective equipment (face masks, gloves)

Working Conditions

• May be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
