Job Description
  • Develop and submit whitepapers and proposals in response to USG solicitations, including writing, editing, project planning, and contracting - positioning GDLS for external R&D funding and visibility to USG technology investments
  • Develop and promote manufacturing process technologies across GDLS, serving as a direct interface with Engineering to identify new process needs in support of future GDLS products
  • Participate in the development of project schedules, including material need dates and schedule to be able to incorporate changes
  • Coordinate GDLS membership and participation in applicable industry consortiums, aimed at capturing technology development opportunities and funding
  • Maintain contact with the plants to address manufacturing process challenges to their work scope
  • Build relationships and collaboration with USG research organizations - positioning GDLS for external R&D funding and maximizing technology awareness
  • Contribute to strategic discussions regarding existing and future GDLS manufacturing capabilities, including frequent contact with GDLS plants to address build plans, technology gaps, and process improvement opportunities
  • Identify opportunities for enterprise-wide collaboration and process advancement, such as leading working groups or developing web-based tools to accelerate and streamline implementation of new technology
  • Support prototype and production build activities withing GDLS locations and suppliers
  • Support Manufacturing Process Technology and Development Efforts (IRAD, M&PE, B&P, ManTech, and Program Funding)
  • Project manage process technology funded programs. Responsible to support proposals, schedule, cost, and ensuring all technical aspects are met.
  • Execute R&D projects, including coordination of supporting functional organizations, process decisions, design implementation, and validation
  • Coordinate product and process development, including industrial base, design, cost, materials, process capability, quality, manpower resources, facility infrastructure, material planning, etc.
  • Support manufacturing plans, risk assessments, and proposal planning
  • Resolve/ assist in resolution of plants' manufacturing issues
Position Requirements:
  • Considerable knowledge of GDLS manufacturing plant capabilities, and previous plant experience is preferred
  • Knowledgeable of military specifications and requirements applicable to GDLS manufacturing operations – including DoD Acquisition Framework (Milestones, MRLs, CDRLs, etc.)
  • Substantial awareness of GDLS products, Customers, competitors, and internal operations is preferred
  • Willing to travel when needed; valid passport for international travel is preferred
  • Comfortable briefing complex topics to high-level audiences
  • Ability to analyze processes for efficiency, manpower demands, equipment requirements, and recommended improvements
  • Capable of frequent interface with Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Production, Finance, Contracts, Customers, suppliers, and other organizations
  • Strong computer skills with Window-based PC systems & applicable software (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teamcenter, Oracle, etc)
  • Established skills in technical leadership, project execution and conflict management – with proven competency in effective problem solving and decision making
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently in a self-motivated environment
  • Capable of reviewing designs in a CAD system (Pro-E preferred), including interrogating models and drawings to evaluate dimensions and tolerances, as well as Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) improvement opportunities
  • The ability to function in a team-based environment
  • Extensive knowledge of manufacturing characteristics of various materials, such as aluminum, steel, titanium, and composites
  • Knowledgeable on a wide range of applicable process technologies, including how and where to leverage them for improving efficiency, quality, safety, and performance
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Welding Engineering (or equivalent) is required; additional graduate-level degree is preferred
