Posting Summary
The Books Editor provides management oversight and leadership of, and editing services for, the books division of the University of Vermont Press, a major program of the University of Vermont Libraries that develops and publishes peer-reviewed, rigorously edited, open-access scholarship for an international, online audience. Serving as the Press’s acquiring editor, the Books Editor recruits series editors, solicits manuscripts from authors working outside established lists, oversees all aspects of the peer-review process, conducts all developmental editing, and maintains relationships with outside production vendors to publish approved titles in accessible digital and print formats. The Books Editor also manages the Press’s editorial board and plays a central, collaborative role in strategizing, developing, growing, and publicizing the UVM Press.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or related field and two to four years related experience. A minimum of three years of editorial experience at a scholarly press, including developmental editing experience, with at least two of those three years in manuscript acquisitions. Facility in finding and cultivating potential authors, attracting work already under development, and commissioning new work. Outstanding English writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including familiarity with commonly used style guides and academic publishing practices. Proven record of identifying and attracting prospective authors and titles. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated professional competency in project management skills. Experience planning, strategizing, creating, and producing digital content. Proficiency with software and internet technology used in support of open-access publishing functions; familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite; interest in emerging publishing trends and technologies. Knowledge and support of best practice in publishing of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Commitment to online accessibility and inclusivity, including familiarity with conscious style and web accessibility best practices.
