The Managing Editor is a leader in bringing high-quality, compelling, and engaging stories to Rocky Mountain Public Media audiences. As a Journalism department leader, the Managing Editor supports members of the team in story ideation and community engagement, while cultivating community partnerships and supporting audience-integrated content models. This position oversees production of daily content while contributing solo and team efforts to daily, weekly, and long-term projects. The Managing Editor supports the Journalism Directors in ongoing and evolving content initiatives.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


  • Assists in research, data collection, and story support on a case-by-case basis.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Onboards and trains new employees to department specifications.
  • Cultivates partnerships with community groups across Colorado.
  • Works independently and with other Journalism team members to produce impactful community-centered content across Colorado in support of short, long-term, and special project initiatives.
  • Supervises Journalism team members and other support staff as assigned.
  • Provides support for Journalism team members in the creation of video segments and programs following PBS, NPR, and FCC technical standards.
  • Writes two or more articles per week, updates other website assets, and engages with PBS media platforms.
  • Gathers and vets story ideas and sources, maintaining an ongoing list of potential assignments for team members.
  • Ensures ethical and appropriate reporting, accuracy, and alignment with the organization's values as the Journalism team's primary guide and resource for story ideas, development, and copy editing.
  • Leads special and long-term projects as assigned.
  • Maintains story status table on Journalism SharePoint to identify each story author(s), assets, delivery timeline, and reporting support needed.
  • Works with Digital Media Manager to set a weekly schedule of publication.
  • Creates and updates writing workshops and guides, including community-engaged reporting best practices.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Published work samples for regional, national, and other audiences across multi-media including books, magazines, newspapers, research articles, and web-based writing.
  • Experience creating multimedia promotional campaigns, including social and digital media preferred.
  • A mix of demonstrated skills, abilities and knowledge may be considered in place of educational requirements.
  • Degree in a relevant field with strong evidence of practice in writing and copy editing preferred.
  • 10+ Years of related experience required
  • Strong research skills.


ADDITIONAL Qualifications Of Position


  • Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable MVR; must be insurable for driving station vehicles.
  • Possession of a commercial drone license is preferred.
  • Must possess exceptional time management, decision making and organizational skills.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally and productively with people at all levels.
  • Must be able to work both independently and as a collaborative and productive team member.

WORK ENVIRONMENT


This position works primarily in office, studio, editing, and field environments. This position must be able to work a flexible schedule with occasionally long hours including some evenings and weekends. Must be able to travel throughout the state and beyond, on occasion.
