Summary
Oversees the management of the Environmental, Chemistry, and Radiation Protection Programs which provide the required protection of the environment, asset protection (plant systems both primary and secondary), station personnel and the general public from the effects of chemical and radiological hazards at a nuclear power station. Provides technical guidance for development and implementation of policies/programs that aid in the generation of electricity while minimizing the radiological and chemical impact on the personnel, environment, systems and components, limiting liability to Duke Energy, and ensuring that all regulatory and industry best practices are implemented.
Responsibilities
  • Provides direction and support for the implementation of the radiological aspects of the station Emergency Plan. Ensures department personnel are trained and qualified to support these functions, including afterhours response and staffing
  • Oversee company resources supporting environmental, chemistry and radiological activities (including decontamination activities), strategic planning, training and qualifications for each functional area, capital and O&M budgets during on-line and outage time periods, employee development, performance management, and human resource issues
  • Interface with Nuclear Oversight Services (NOS) and Nuclear Safety Review Board (NSRB) on Station and Unit evaluations/issue resolutions and self-assessments. Interfaces with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), and American Nuclear Insurers (ANI), and state agencies to implement industry best practices, and take actions to close gaps identified by these external stakeholders
  • Oversees the implementation of: Radiation Protection program elements, including ALARA, Radioactive Material Shipping, RP Instrumentation, Dosimetry, and environmental monitoring programs & Chemistry programs elements, including QA/QC, primary and secondary chemistry, radwaste systems, radiological effluents, and environmental programs such as groundwater, hazardous waste, and wastewater.
  • Directly supervises and oversees Radiation Protection and Chemistry General Supervisors of Supervising Scientists and provides direction on departmental priorities. Provides coaching and feedback to General Supervisors and 1st line Supervision to ensure consistent implementation of fundamental behaviors. Also, ensures department technician behaviors are aligned with industry best practices.
Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering or Science and 5 years of work-related experience

  • Broad knowledge of appropriate environmental programs and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Understands inter-departmental relationships and processes
  • Performs at the highest level to deliver value to customers and other stakeholders
  • Previous Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license, SRO certification, or Technical Nuclear Certification (TNC)
  • Five (5) years in leadership position with-in nuclear
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goals
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • More than ten years of experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations.
  • Experience in interfacing with and influencing regulatory agencies at the local, state and federal level
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives or work groups in multiple locations.
  • Consistently delivers superior results while improving products, services and processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., influencing and listening skills to deal effectively with all levels of employees and management).
  • Ability to analyze data and develop appropriate strategic responses.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability for own actions while modeling company values
  • Certified by the American Board of Health physics
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians
  • Leadership, management and supervisory skills.
Specific Requirements
The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications.
  • In lieu of an Associates degree, the following can meet basic qualifications: 5-years of RP, Chemistry, Operations, or Engineering related experience in a leadership position; Minimum of 5 years experience with 3 years of radiation protection, radiochemistry, operations, at an operating nuclear station
  • Formal training in radiation protection
  • 1 year of supervisory or management experience
  • 3 years of nuclear power plant experience
