Wage Range: $78,874 - $126,173 per year


Posted wage ranges represent the entire range from minimum to maximum. For jobs with more than one level, the posted range reflects the minimum of the lowest level and the maximum of the highest level. Job Summary:

Manages non-technical laboratory business operations and inpatient, outpatient, and outreach phlebotomy services. Responsible for general oversight of laboratory revenue strategies and billing compliance. Point person for management, tracking and trending departmental service-related issues. Direct oversight of Lab Client Services and Laboratory billing. Collaborates with laboratory leadership to make strategic and tactical decisions regarding the use and application of laboratory and clinical informatics to drive laboratory quality metrics. Works with laboratory leadership to meet departmental and organizational goals.

Primary Duties:

  • Develops productivity reports and reviews with respective lab manager or director.
  • Works collaboratively with other management staff and personnel to assist in communicating and promoting the interrelationship of clinical and lab business activities and regulatory billing requirements.
  • Works collaboratively with reference laboratory management to address issues that directly affect patient care and patient safety. Assists Laboratory Director with tracking and trending issues for mitigation to align with expected quality metrics.
  • Develops, approves, implements, and maintains departmental procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for maintaining inpatient and outreach phlebotomy performance goals.
  • Monitors billing to acquire and distribute all information necessary to bill for services performed for reference lab STAT testing, and work performed for other hospitals. Manages billing processes and works with billing assistant to identify and correct billing errors.
  • Manages and directs the laboratory billing team.
  • Actively promotes and supports the participation of staff in applying principles of continuous quality improvement.
  • Responsible for interviewing and hiring new employees; oversees the orientation of new employees. Develops and implements training and competency procedures.
  • Manages and oversees the non-technical day-to-day operations of laboratory business.
  • Assists with preparing the departmental budget and operates within approved budget.
  • Works collaboratively with inpatient and outreach clients on issues related to the non-technical aspects of the laboratory business.
  • Manages the Lab Client Services team. While not performing the technical work, does have extensive knowledge of the complicated tests performed by referral laboratories. Requires a professional level of knowledge to execute, analyze and consult with technologists, pathologists on testing that is to be performed.
  • Responsible for laboratory billing compliance; works with finance department to audit charge master to ensure that lab CPT codes are updated as needed.
  • Indirectly oversees both inpatient and outreach phlebotomy teams and manages the inpatient and outreach phlebotomy supervisors to ensure staff compliance with guidelines for ordering, collecting, and processing specimens.
  • Works with users to create new reports, new workflow, or other system changes to increase efficiency and system usability to enhance existing processes and effective utilization of human resources.

License, Certification, Education, or Experience:

REQUIRED for the position:

  • 3 years of experience with outreach or reference laboratory services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CAP standards.
  • 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory including 3 years in a management, supervisory or lead position.
  • Associate degree in health sciences, Computer Sciences or related field, or equivalent work experience in the laboratory setting.

DESIRED for the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Medical Technology, or Business Management.
  • Demonstrate understanding of laboratory operations and testing.
  • Self-planning and organizing skills enabling one to multi-task effectively in an interrupt-driven environment while maintaining a strong work ethic geared toward customer service.
  • Experience with EPIC laboratory information systems.
