Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic (Utilities) performs skilled work in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all utility operations systems at the Danforth Campus and all remote university owned locations (excluding quadrangle management leased retail spaces and quadrangle housing managed properties). Employee in this position will be required to do daily operational rounds, perform scheduled maintenance and repairs, and respond to alarms and calls for service as needed, in a multi-craft role. Employee in this position will also assist the night mechanic(s) in emergencies when working evening/night shifts.
The schedule for this position is Monday–Friday, 2:30PM – 10:30PM.
The hourly rate for this position is $36.25 and all hours worked during the 2nd shift will receive a $.75 shift differential.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responds to work orders and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable, safe/secure and friendly manner.
  • Additional duties include performing annual equipment teardowns, corrective and preventative maintenance, and equipment cleaning in preparation for inspections and seasonal lay-up.
  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs all existing and future heating/cooling plants, related piping distribution systems and related electrical/control systems. This includes, but is not limited to, all remote/satellite thermal plants and chiller plants across the entire Danforth Campus, South 40, West Campus, North Campus, South Campus, 560 Building and Loop Lofts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Willingness to work in multi-craft positions/situations.
  • Pro-actively identifies, “trouble-shooting”, communicating and addressing needs both without direction when appropriate and at other times when responding to work orders and/or a supervisor’s instruction.
  • Utilizes materials, supplies, tools and other University property, as well as handling one’s person in a safe/responsible, productive manner.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read and understand blue prints.
  • Must be willing to provide one’s own hand tools.
  • Must have a State of Missouri Class E or above driver’s license or the equivalent from another state prior to employment.
  • Understands the importance of satisfying the needs of the campus community (customer oriented) and providing value to the university.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively/appropriately with members of the campus community and other employees within Facilities.
  • Excellent attendance record.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair commercial/industrial boiler and chiller related systems in an unsupervised manner on an afterhours shift, across the entire main Danforth Campus, South 40 and all above listed remote/satellite locations.
  • Must have successfully completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (such as a Ranken Technical College two-year certification program) or other equivalent training program.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in a particular craft or multi-craft position.
  • Must be able to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver’s License by the end of the probationary period and cannot drive university owned vehicles until Class E Driver’s License is obtained.
  • A minimum of five years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing commercial/industrial boiler and chiller related systems.
  • Capable of doing extensive walking, climbing stairs/ladders, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and other similar physical activity.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended shifts while engaging in physically demanding work in cases of operational emergencies.

Salary Range

$36.25

The salary rate for this position is determined by the current union contract. Please note that there may be salary differentials for working second or third shifts.
